5 Reasons Why I’m So Excited About News Break — and You Should Be Too
It’s always a good idea to diversify.
You like money, right? So do I. That’s why I was excited to hear about the new Creators program at News Break.
If you are not familiar with News Break, they bill themselves as the number one news aggregator in the country. They bring together a plethora of local, regional and national news tailored to your particular interests.
People love this app. It’s the number one news app in Google Play and number three in the App store for people who like Apple products. They have 45 million active users and log 1.5 billion (yes billion) page views per month. Everything on the site is customized so that you can easily read stories from any of your devices.
The News Break Creators program launched in November. The company has created a large pool of funds to pay creators to diversify their content. The site is moving past straight news and more into other topics like health, personal growth, relationships, and more — the kind of topics many of us write about on Medium.
News Break doesn’t just take anyone. You have to apply to be a creator on the site and provide them with evidence of your other writing to evaluate. If they like what they see, they will actually offer you a contract wherein exchange for meeting minimum thresholds around story production, followers and views you can receive a minimum monthly payment. (Note that different writers receive different contract terms, so your contract might not be the same as someone else’s.)
Here’s why I’m excited:
- Not just anyone is accepted. This tells me that News Break is looking for writers that have honed their craft and can appeal to their readers.
- The contract is a level of professionalism that shows me that News Break considers me an asset. It’s a joint commitment that we will work together to make the expansion of the site successful.
- I’m getting in on the ground floor of what will likely be huge growth on the site. I always hear people talk about how exciting and profitable it was in the early days of the Medium Partner Program or the early days of Kindle Unlimited (where I publish books). Inevitably those early wins faded, but with News Break, I’m in a position to ride the wave of early adopter success.
- Distribution is not at the whim of editors and curators. In News Break, the algorithms get your story in front of people who want to see it. It leads to an unbelievably high number of impressions.
- It allows me to diversify my income streams. Although I have a full-time job that pays well, I love having an extra income. Writing is my passion, and also my early retirement plan. I will continue to write on Medium, continue to publish, and do what I can to create a stable long-term income for myself.
