5 Reasons People Like to Read Numbered Lists and Stories with Numbers in the Title

Have you ever thought about why we’re attracted to these type of stories?

Numbers are addictive and maybe that’s why people are so attracted to them. I like to play scratchers, and I also occasionally like the various lottery draws, but too much time occurs between the games so I end up losing patience.

So when I learned about the Hot Spots lottery game in California where I live, I began playing that, but then I started losing my mind. I was playing this habit forming numbers game on a regular daily basis.

Unlike most of the other draw games that occur days apart, this game starts over again every 4 minutes so if I want to, I can just keep on selecting numbers and playing at 4 minute intervals.

The Numbers Attract Me

The numbers stretched out across my computer screen in a 1 to 80 number grid is what attracts me to this game. In a similar way that people read titles and latch on to the numbers they contain, that’s what happens to me.

All I have to do is look at those numbers, and they seem to start calling out to me. I see number combinations in every place I look.

The game is all about picking anywhere from 1 to 10 numbers per game (for the same $1 or $2 a game), and hoping your numbers are called out of the 20 numbers that are drawn.

Your mind keeps telling you that with each game you were so close to choosing a winning combination, that you should try again, and you’ll surely get it.

Of course, since numbers are everywhere, devising winning combinations in your mind is a constant things, because any number you see is surely a sign.

I got seriously stuck on playing this game and I couldn’t understand it. It wasn’t like the scratchers, where I’d play a few games, get disgusted, and cut myself off, without looking back.

It was something about those darn numbers! They kept getting together and ganging up on me; forcing me to pay attention when I should have just looked away.

When I began to really notice the affect the numbers were having on me, I literally had to give myself a stern talking to, then I stopped playing completely, since I couldn’t do it in moderation..

So what is the deal with numbers?

I honestly don’t even know. I know; I said I was going to tell you 5 reasons why I think we’re all so obsessed with numbers (some more of us than others).

I will; but, I didn’t say they would necessarily be good reasons. In fact, you may not even agree with the reasons I give.

That’s okay, because these are my 5 reasons, so if you have others, feel free to comment and say so.

Without further ado, here are the 5 reasons that I believe (some) readers enjoy reading a story containing a number in the title, or a numbered list.

1) Numbers jump out and catch our attention, probably because they’re an obvious contrast to the text.

2) Numbers are easier to recall when trying to remember the title or what the information was about.

3) Numbers present a challenge. We humans enjoy the privilege of counting whatever items or points are being brought out in the material. We tend to have the attitude that says, Let me count and see if the number is correct.

Haven’t you ever found yourself closely scrutinizing one of those countless numbered lists online? You remember how you were:

“Hmm, let me see if they counted right”, and you proceed to see if the number of “Top 10 whatever… “ really only adds up to 8 or 9.

“Nope, those two don’t really count, so it‘s really ’only 8 instead of 10!”

4) Numbers are measurable so we can make comparisons to similar information, with more or less numbers.

5) Numbers help to signal when we’re nearing the end — like now.
