5 Quotes That Will Help You Get Your Life Together
For those of us in need of a wakeup call

Do you feel your life is stagnant? You go day to day on autopilot. Same routine. Work, eat, watch something, repeat. No real energy and no real drive.
I often hit these slumps where I don’t really know what I’m doing. I know I should be doing something more, but I feel lazy and unmotivated to do anything about it. Routine is comfortable. Change takes effort. Weeks go by too fast and suddenly it’s the end of the year.
But every so often I’ll read something that hits me right where it needs to. A line from a book or a quote from an article that snaps me out of my trance. Some of these quotes have been the kick up the backside I needed to get me out of a bad spell. Others I use as a constant reminder to stay focused and purposeful.
Words have extraordinary power and when delivered in the right way, at the right time for the right person, they can transform lives.
If you feel you’re just drifting through life and want a figurative slap in the face to wake you up, here are five powerful quotes that may do just that.
“Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.” — Horrace Mann
This is what astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson wants written on his epitaph. I love this quote because it speaks volumes about our purpose in life.
Our existence is meaningless if we dedicate it to our own pleasure and self-gratification. Joining the rat race to keep up with the Joneses and chase a life of comfort will always leave you hollow. Spending your time trying to give value to others leaves you happy and fulfilled.
I find my emptiest moments in life are when I’m absorbed in my own worries. Finding ways to make more money and live a more comfortable life don’t actually make me happy. They leave me anxious and cautious about the future. But when I spend my time helping others I feel valued and purposeful.
To win ‘some victory for humanity’ doesn’t have to be grand. You don’t have to invent teleportation or find the cure for a disease. Winning a victory means you had an impact on the life of others. That you’ll be remembered for your contributions, no matter how small.
You could create an app that helps save people time. You could open a restaurant that serves amazing food. You could write articles that change people’s lives. Everyone has something to offer. And when you offer your talent and energies to a noble purpose, you move humanity forward.
“If you run you stand a chance of losing, but if you don’t run you’ve already lost.” — Barack Obama
If you ever need a reason to just get off your butt and try something, this quote says it best.
Not starting something because you’re afraid it will fail is a hopeless approach to life. Whether you want to make a career change, write a book, get to know someone you find attractive, or simply try a new recipe, if you don’t try, you’ve already failed.
Of course, you have to be smart about where you put your energy. But if there’s even a little chance of success, you should give it every shot you can if it’s important to you. Don’t spend your days worrying about what-ifs. Go out there and try your best. Don’t drift through life waiting for the perfect opportunity. Trying is the only way you’ll ever get anywhere.
“Someone once told me the definition of hell; on your last day on earth, the person you could have become will meet the person you became.” — Anonymous
One of my biggest fears in life is not fulfilling my potential. It’s not that I have buckets of it. I just have what I have and it’s a shame if I don’t make the most of it.
And the same goes for you. I can guarantee you haven’t maxed out what you’re capable of. Not even close. You have so much locked up inside you waiting to be explored and developed. So why wait another moment? Instead of getting complacent, you should be challenging yourself every single day.
At times I don’t really know where my life is going. But this quote reminds me to just take action regardless. As long as I’m doing something to work on myself, I’m getting closer to the person I ‘could have become’. Whether that’s reading about a topic I’m interested in or practicing a useful skill, anything that makes me better moves me closer to fulfilling my potential.
Use this quote to remind yourself that you’re far from the finished product. Don’t get complacent. You’re likely just getting started. So pull up your socks and get moving. There’s plenty to do.
“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan, and guess what they have planned for you? Not much.” — Jim Rohn
Gentle reminder: there are huge companies out there paying billions to learn about you — what you like, what your weaknesses are, and any opportunities to manipulate you.
This isn’t a conspiracy theory. It’s not even a secret anymore. The more they know about you, the harder it is for you to control your life.
Even without the added disadvantage of big corporations influencing your actions, it’s hard to plan out your life. The world is changing quickly and it’s difficult to keep up. But the less effort you put into being proactive about your decisions, the more likely you’ll end up following the herd and living life according to others.
Self-awareness plays a huge role in this. The more you do to understand yourself, the more control you have. Use this quote as an important reminder that the less you do to actively take a hold of your life, the less likely you are to make anything of it.
“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” — Epictetus
Sometimes it’s not that you’re lazy. It’s not that you’re directionless or lost. It’s that your heart isn’t in it anymore. Maybe something big changed. You may have lost your job or maybe the entire world was hit by a pandemic and that turned your life upside down.
It’s hard. I’ve had days where I’ve felt too depressed and alone to bing myself to do anything. But I’ve learned that amidst the chaos and the noise, your heart and mind always have the ability to react in a positive way.
When I went through a bad breakup, it took a while to recover. But the biggest thing I learned from the experience was that I was in control of how I moved forward. I needed time to hurt and reflect. But after a certain point, I needed to snap out of it and move on.
Some situations are worse than others. Sometimes it’s OK to take time and come to terms. But your next move should always be to make the most of the situation. See how you can use it to your advantage. Maybe use it as a chance to recalibrate or even start over.
And once you do, go all in and don’t look back.
In Summary
There are five main ideas that pull me out of my tired complacency every time I hit a lull.
#1: You were born to help move the world forward.
#2: You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
#3: Do everything you can to become your best possible self.
#4: Be the hero of your own story, not a side character of someone else’s.
#5: Life will throw all kinds of things at you. Make sure to make the most of each one.
But saying it like that doesn’t hit the same way. The way the quotes are worded is what gives them power. So even when you are familiar with their ideas, go back to the original words every time you start to dip. They’ll grab your attention, ignite your drive and push you where you need to be going.
