I love traveling by train, as many of you know. My favorite train ride I’ve ever taken was a regional train from Vienna to Puchberg am Schneeberg in Austria in the summer of 2020.

My goal is to ride as many beautiful train routes as possible in the next couple of years.

In this article, I’ll show you the most beautiful train routes in the world. Ranked by me.

1. The Glacier Express — Switzerland

The Glacier Express is one of the routes I want to try badly shortly — in one of my favorite countries: Switzerland.

The Glacier Express, which runs from St. Moritz to Zermatt, transports passengers through the Swiss Alps through a variety of landscapes, including ancient forests, charming cities, and, as the name says, pristine glaciers.

One on my bucket list.

2. The Flåm Line — Norway

The Flåm Line is a 20.2-kilometer railway line in Aurland Municipality, Vestland County, Norway, that connects Myrdal and Flåm. Norway is one of the countries that I want to see the most, as I’ve never been there.

It is a branch line of the Bergen Line that links the mainline with Sognefjord and travels through the Flmsdalen valley.

The train ride passes through spectacular scenery, including the Rallar road, high mountains, stunning waterfalls, 20 tunnels, and several overlooks.

3. Linke Rheinstrecke — Germany

The Linke Rheinstrecke is a 185-kilometer railway line that runs from Cologne to Mainz through Bonn, Koblenz, and Bingen.

I’ve never traveled over the Linke Rheinstrecke; I only traveled aside the line once when I visited Switzerland in the summer of 2019 with my girlfriend — we went on the highspeed trains (ICE) and didn’t see anything of the beautiful landscape.

The Linke Rheinstrecke is a route that takes a little longer (over an hour) than the express train but it’s so beautiful — especially with the Panorama View Train Cabins of the Swiss Railway.

4. The Trans-Siberian Express — Russia

This well-known railway route is 5772 miles long and traverses six time zones. It traverses Russia, Mongolia, and China. Depending on your destinations, you may schedule a journey lasting anything from 7 to 21 days.

Take in the breathtaking vistas of the Ural Mountains and the Russian Steppe.

5. West Highland Line — Scotland

With craggy hills, secluded lochs, and flashes of shoreline, Scotland’s West Highland Line is undoubtedly a spectacular excursion. The route and steam train are so appealing that they appear in the Harry Potter films as the Hogwarts Express.
