Genius or pure stupidity?

Back when the internet was invented, people regarded it as a groundbreaking technology.

However, no one could have ever foreseen to what extent it would ultimately impact the world.

Particularly, in this day and age, the majority of the world’s population utilizes it daily in some way or another.

While most internet users browse the web for entertainment, informative content, and shopping, others have found ways to capitalize on it.

And no, I'm not referring to the typical online jobs, like Instagram models and so on.

Some individuals have managed to build quite fruitful online careers in some ‘‘peculiar’’ ways, to say the least.

Here are 5 prime examples of such ways that just might make you reconsider your current occupation.

1. Sleep Streams

Not too long ago, a trend broke out in which people would Livestream themselves sleeping for a certain amount of hours on live streaming websites like Twitch and YouTube.

Anyone curious enough could join and watch those Livestreams.

The viewers could even leave a monetary donation for the person sleeping if they so wanted to.

For obvious reasons, the idea seemed like it was doomed to fail.

Yet, not only did it not fail, but it instantly became one of the most popular categories on those websites.

For some reason, people enjoyed seeing others sleep.

Of course, this meant that the creators of such Livestreams gained a significant amount of money at the end of every stream.

What’s to note is that these creators’ income from the live streams was composed purely of the donations given to them by their viewers.

Some well-known Twitch and YouTube creators managed to earn 4 digit revenues from those who live streams alone.

Notably, the famous Youtube creator Troydan earned over $5000 just for sleeping for 5 hours!

The trend has now died out, but there are still some creators out there that continue doing these types of live streams.

2. Only Fans

OnlyFans is a content subscription service, which allows creators to post content exclusively for their fans.

The website also allows content creators to receive funding from their fans in the form of monthly subscriptions, tips, and the pay-per-view feature.

It’s worth mentioning that, unlike other social media platforms, pornographic material is not prohibited on Only Fans.

Due to this, Only Fans is extremely popular among sex workers, who make up a big part of the creator base in the platform.

Despite the website’s intention to serve as a platform for creators to share content only with their fans, it didn’t take long for people to realize that they could post provocative material of themselves and place it behind a paywall that they could profit from.

Many succeeded big time in doing so.

The 18-year-old rapper Danielle Bregoli, who goes by the alias of ‘‘Bhad Bhabie’’, joined the website the day she turned 18 this year.

The price for the monthly subscription required to view her content there was set to $23.99.

Remarkably, she broke the website’s record for the fastest time for a creator to reach $1.000.000 in earnings as she managed this feat in under 5 hours after creating her account.

Keep in mind that Danielle is only 18, and the Only Fans’ alleged target demographic is males ranging between the ages of 18 to 50.

3. Text-To-Speech Live Donations

While browsing the web, you might have come across some algorithms, like Google Translate, that can transform any text into speech. Hence their name.

You’d be surprised to know, though, that one man has managed to turn this simple algorithm into an online career in a rather ‘‘creative’’ way.

This man is none other than Steven Andy.

More commonly known by his Youtube nickname ‘‘Asian Andy’’, Steven Andy is a live streamer and vlogger in Los Angeles.

Steven lives streams his daily life on Youtube but with a twist. He allows his audience to interfere with his life.

Whenever he live streams, he always carries an insanely loud Bluetooth speaker on his backpack, which is connected to his phone and is programmed to read aloud any message his viewers type to him.

The means he uses to accomplish this is a basic text-to-speech algorithm.

Each message cost ranges from $3 to $100.

As you might imagine, Steven doesn’t receive the most ‘‘kind-hearted’’ messages out there.

The viewers abuse the feature by sending offensive messages to him, which are transformed into speech for everyone around him to listen to.

He, basically, allows his viewers to humiliate him in real-time for their entertainment.

However, when money talks, shame walks.

Steven Andy reportedly earns anywhere from $500 to $10.000 per live stream, solely from his viewers’ text-to-speech donations.

Apart from that, his Youtube channel has over 1 million subscribers. It is safe to assume that he earns some extra revenue from the advertisements that Youtube places on several of his videos.

4. Selling Bath Water

When it comes to being successful as a content creator, keeping your audience constantly engaged is a top priority.

Well, Mary-Belle Kirschner, better known as ‘‘Belle Delphine’’, may have taken this principle a little too far.

Belle is a cosplayer on Youtube that stands out for her controversial online persona and behavior.

Her videos consist of highly provocative material for Youtube’s standards, similar to those you find on adult video websites.

Despite all the heavy criticism her videos initially received, Belle managed to build a loyal fanbase on the website. As of today, her Youtube channel has over 2.000.000 subscribers.

While at her peak, in the summer of 2019, Belle launched her website, which allowed fans to purchase exclusive ‘‘Belle Delphine’’ merchandise.

Fans now had the chance to buy posters, mousepads, and even bathwater!

This, of course, was no ‘‘regular’’ bathwater. It was Belle’s used bathwater placed in a jar.

The ‘‘GamerGirl Bathwater’’ (which was its product name on the website) gathered worldwide attention mainly due to the nature of the product.

Opinions originally differed, with some calling the most absurd product they’ve ever seen and others praising Belle for her distinct entrepreneurial mindset.

Within 3 days after becoming available on her website, the ‘‘GamerGirl Bathwater’’ sold over 500 units.

Each jar of bathwater was priced at $30.

A Reddit user calculated Belle’s ‘‘GamerGirl Bathwater’’ earnings and found out that for every 2.560 jars of bathwater sold, Belle made over $73.500!

This is just a rough estimation, though, so take that with a grain of salt.

5. Cameo

Cameo is a website that allows fans to receive personalized video messages from their favorite celebrities.

Celebrities with 20.000 or more followers on Instagram can create an account on the website.

Each celebrity charges anywhere from $5 to $2.500 per video message. Generally, more prominent celebrities charge more for their services.

People have criticized Cameo in the past, with many describing it as a platform that serves as a second chance for ‘‘two-bit’’ or ‘‘washed up’’ celebrities.

Either way, Cameo seems like a fun way for someone to interact with their favorite celebrity.

It’s also no secret that some of those celebrities have raked it in from making these short videos.

According to ‘‘The Hustle’’, the highest-paid creator on the platform is Michael Rapaport, with an estimated revenue of $222.297!

He charges $200 for a video message request that lasts anywhere from 20 seconds to 2 minutes.

I guess, at least, you get what you pay for.
