5 Long Term Changes I Would like to See in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, the country I was born in, the country I love

Nowadays, we are, as Sri Lankans experiencing an economic crisis that is invasive, even in dreams, unable to sleep.
Many of my friends have already departed the country due to this catastrophe. Many are considering leaving. Those who went to earn money and study and thought of returning to Sri Lanka now paused their plans with this ongoing situation. A few friends considered living here, believing positive changes in their lives.
I can’t tell you where it will go, but I hope for a brighter future as I’ve always dreamed, every Sri Lankan dreamed. Dreams will not become true unless we take action to make them a reality.
The current economic situation is not favorable for anyone.
The country needs some severe long-term changes to progress and develop sustainably.
So many experts have suggested principal economic instruments, infrastructure, education, health care, and corruption reforms. I gladly welcome any such ideas from people who have experience.
What I mentioned here are fundamental changes. I believe these have a significant impact within a decade if followed. I propose these with the hope of seeing my nation become great. These are based on my personal experiences and viewpoints.
I also believe, these points are relevant beyond the scope of my country. You could relate this back to your life and improve it too.
1 . People to Nurture Humanism beyond Their Ethnicity
Sri Lanka is home to four distinct civilizations: Buddhism, Saivism, Christianity, and Islam.
I believe distinctions can only be surpassed through education. Because I went to school, which includes a variety of religious believers and language speakers, I think one cultural tradition may be developed. That is humanism.
Still, I had no idea how many different religions there were in my school. Humanism is the only culture that has been established with a focus on a better Sri Lanka.
We can’t expect a complete transformation in only a few years. Still, we may create a new generation of humanists in decades. They will be able to learn the concepts taught in their future religion and develop humanism.
2 . Prioritize What’s Truly Essential To Live
I’ve been told that the three most essential wants are Food, Clothes, and a Place to Call home. If you’re aware of any updates, please let me know.
But, I disagree with the deep battle between my mind and me. I think it should be adjusted as land, sunlight, water, and air do. We must, as a species, utilize these four items to stay alive. This was something we learned is only required by plants. Yes, the plants are the manufacturer of food. We’ve been taught to live our lives as consumers. What if we didn’t prevent the four most essential?. Do you think plants survive or other creatures? Not.
We should all wake up and realize that we’re not the only ones on this planet. We share it with other species, and we must learn to respect and protect them.
Without them, we can’t have food, clothes, and a home.
3 . Cultivate a Purposeful Life over Mechanical Lifestyle
Although many people worked in the private sector, many worried that they did not obtain public sector jobs or were not chosen through competitive examinations. If you fall into that category, don’t be afraid any longer.
I’ve worked in both the private and public sectors. Many people believe that all private sector businesses pressure their employees. In contrast, all public sector workers take advantage of their free time.
You may not realize that there are numerous excellent private businesses. Many public sector employees suffer from stress and tension. Whether their titles are administrative or technical, all employees work under labor law.
Most of our adult life now begins with taking tests, finding a job, working for someone else’s goal, retiring, stressing over the lost time, and ending life.
A long-term change necessitates a shift in mindset. But how?
I believe that only teachers and parents can install a good mindset in children and encourage them to identify their purpose on this earth.
If your employer’s aim and your goal are the same, it’s the place that will propel you forward. Many individuals work without knowing their company’s vision or mission because it is written on paper and demonstrated in orientation.
Live your life with a purpose, and contribute to this world.
4 . Go Beyond Your Field of Expertise and Be a Generalist
I would suggest that everyone learn the fundamentals of education, economics, finance, law, investments, health, agriculture, ongoing, and future.
Everyone understands it. But we begin to believe that we are not experts in any of these fields when applying. Though we are material with elements from all such vocations. Why do you avoid learning more so that your future generations can live in a better world?
This will result in everyone being wealthy, having social equality, and making better democratic choices.
I am confident that this level of continuous learning will lead to the most excellent society with humans who contribute back to the living community and the whole earth.
5 . Filter Out Information That Could Potentially Degrade People’s Life
Most people have the habit of watching news twice a day-morning and evening. I agree that there are many excellent shows. The only thing I’m concerned about is the news.
I’m slightly concerned about keeping up with what’s happening around us. I believe that this habit of updating and encouraging news providers to overload us with information is a mistake.
Do you feel that all media serve to upgrade your life?.
Over the years, days have been filled with various breakless breaking news. Almost all news stations cover information such as murder, robbery, the arrest of a drug dealer, their death, meaningless advertising interviews with politicians, their arrest, verbal conflicts between them (and various other things).
Do you believe watching such news at the end and the beginning of every day will change the nation’s future?
Those media provide people with the confidence to tell lies, commit robberies, and engage in every form of evil in society to come up with methods of avoiding arrest. Do you think such news will encourage youngsters to question and appreciate to foster a brighter future? I do not believe so.
As per the book “Power of your subconscious mind,” by Joseph Murphy these negative news are training our subconscious mind to degenerate the nation.
How do we overcome it? Change for a change.
Be more careful about what information you receive and resist over-consuming information. Your actions today to avoid such information or reduce the demand for such information will change news providers’ mindsets and business models.
In Conclusion
I completely understand that each of you has a unique experience. All of these are within my observational frame of reference. Based on my observations and ideas, these are just some of the improvements I would like to see in Sri Lanka. I am hopeful that one day, my dreams will become a reality.
Many people may have different viewpoints on this. But, whether you agree or disagree with me, we all have one common goal: to build a better nation. There’s nothing else to it.
Think forward, act smart, and contribute to building better earth.
