5 Little macOS Apps that Make a Big Difference in 2024

Boost your productivity using these tiny little apps for macOS!

1. DropOver

I just discovered this app through Reddit and I’m already hooked. This app makes Drag and Drop easier. You can stash, gather, or move draggable content without having to open side-by-side windows.

2. LinearMouse

This app is a must for people who use their mouse a lot! LinearMouse allows you to customize several aspects of your mouse experience. On Mac, I run this app on startup to disable pointer acceleration and set the right pointer speed. While you can change the mouse speed in macOS settings, it is the acceleration that’s bothering. The following picture shows why:

Acceleration causes the mouse cursor to move further depending on how fast you move your mouse.

3. TextGrabber

This app allows you to take a temporary screenshot of your screen and extract the text in it! It then copies that text in your clipboard. Simple and useful.

4. Paletro

With Paletro, by pressing ⇧⌘P (or your own shortcut), you have access to all of the functionality of current focused app, including keyboard shortcuts for the most common operations. It’s like macOS’s native feature that allows you to press ⇧⌘/ and search the menu bar of the app, but Paletro gives you that functionality in a much more user-friendly way.

5. BetterDisplay (formerly BetterDummy)

BetterDisplay allows you to create custom resolutions, enable XDR/HDR on monitors that Apple doesn’t support (any <4K monitor), have extra brightness, virtual screens, Picture in Picture, and more! Using this app, you can also turn off your MacBook’s display while connecting it to an external monitor without having to close the lid!
