5 Habits Successful Data Scientists Should Master

Grind, networking, sharing, creating.

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re trying to get into the world of Data Science, or you’re already working in it. To be a successful Data Scientist or Machine Learning Engineer, you should aim to be irreplaceable, and to stand out from the crowd.

This isn’t a “get rich quick” kind of article, but there are certain habits you should focus on to be an efficient Data Scientist.

Keep on grinding

It’s not a secret, Data Science is an ever-growing field, multi-disciplinary, and always changing. New trends, new tools, technologies, new papers every week or month.

Continuous learning and improvement are paramount for Data Scientists looking to stand out.

Now, you might be a student or working a 9–5 job, it might get uncomfortable, but try to dedicate three to five hour per week learning new skills, reading papers, books, look for new online courses.

Another strategy might be to look for new job descriptions, and see companies’ required skills, are you lacking them? Do you think they’re worth learning? Go for it.

Networking

If you’re working for a company, chances are you’re not working alone. Data Science is not a solo adventure, networking can be a very valuable asset.

Go on LinkedIn, on pages like Google’s, Facebook’s, Microsoft’s, etc. Go on Data Scientists profiles. You’ll probably see they have thousands of connections, they’re sharing posts, engaging.

Data Science is evolving by the minute, you’ll need like-minded professionals and their knowledge around.

Besides, you’ll increase your chances for freelancing gigs, or even job offers.

Join and be active in communities

Don’t just stare and the world changing, be a part of it. Be a pioneer. Write valuable blog posts, articles. Read, share, write research papers. Join online communities, engage with others and share your journey.

Noone of my friends here are passionate about this stuff, so back in June I founded Artificialis, an online community with like-minded people and Machine Learning practitioners.

A solid mind starts with a solid body

You probably already heard it somewhere, and it’s true. You won’t have a bright mind if you’re not taking care of the rest, and that’s not just to become a good data scientist.

Exercise regularly, go for a walk sometimes during the week, take the stairs, eat healthy.

Stop consuming, start creating

Doing 20 different online courses isn’t going to help you become a successful Data Scientist. The more online courses you do, the more you realize they’re very similar to each other. Once you become acquainted with the field, it’s time to give back to the community.

Build your projects, big ones. Maintain proper documentation, write blog posts out of it. Write about what you learned, what you’re learning, it’s also a great way to learn.

Hopefully it helps.
