5 fads from my childhood that I wish would make a comeback
A fad by internet definition is an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short- lived and without basis in the object’s qualities; a craze.
I was born in June of 1999. That year was the last year of the 90s and the second millennium. But like most people born towards the end of the 90s we don’t remember anything about the 90s even though we were 90s babies.
It was more so the years that followed the 2000s when we started school and this is when those types of memories would be embedded in our brain. I still have nostalgia just thinking about the 2000’s bringing back the heydays of my childhood. And so here is a list of items that I have constantly feeling nostalgic for.
1. Nintendo DS (2004)
I remember the days of walking down the block in my neighborhood, but also when I was in the house and had nothing to do I would play video games.
I remember that I once had a playstation 2, an xbox 360 and finally I remember receiving the Nintendo DS for Christmas that year and my brother got a PSP. MY Ds was small and compact and decorated with little stickers.
And I also remember taking it on the go with me in a little black purse. I did buy another Nintendo Ds and this was Super NES edition back in 2018, but these days I hoping for something like a handheld system to come back because I have a XBOX S right now and I need something that is a handheld system to comeback as I don’t know about the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS was much more economically feasible.
2.Heelys (2000)
I remember when they were such a big deal that they even had to ban them in schools because students would use them at school. At the time they were known as something that everybody at school had to have.
I had them including my brother. The great thing about Heelys at least was the part where you put the wheel you could just take it out and wear the Heelys as regular sneakers.
I was not that much of a sports person or someone that had the ability to skate around on a skateboard. My brother was the one that got the most out of the use of the Heelys. But from what I remember these sneakers were not just a blast in the past, but part of a growing popularity of children around America getting exercise that is the most important aspect of Heelys as to why they should come back.
They were popular and were able to get children on the move that gives Heelys even more meaning. Heelys are still available to buy, but lost popularity back in 2009.
3. Game Boy Advance SP (2003)
I am pretty sure I did play a game boy at some point when they originally came out, but I only remember those days of playing my handheld Nintendo DS.
I wish that these had more hype as the Nintendo DS did, but the Nintendo DS stood out more as the screen was much bigger and they did have a better experience on the market.
But in my opinion the Game Boy was the OG of handheld systems and that is something not to be forgotten. I would love for the GameBoy to make a big come back, but with a bigger screen of course.
4. Guitar Hero/Rock Band (2005)
I remember having the extensions for the guitar hero game on my Nintendo and it was one of my favorite games to play as it gave a more immersive experience as the object of the games was to hit as many notes as you can on the instrument. I was mostly playing the guitar on that extension.
But I remember I played the physical drums on a gaming system for Guitar Hero as well as it was on a handful of devices both small and big.
Their popularity did eventually fade though faded around 2009 and led to the games coming out of production.
As a result, I do think they should make a comeback because I feel this game did so well in introducing classic songs to the younger generation like I love rock N roll by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts.
5. Zhu Zhu pets(2009)
These were not your typical stuffed animal as they were a cute robotic hamster. I did have a Zhu Zhu pet. I also have a side story in which my brother took the Zhu Zhu pet and put it in my hair and I could not get it out quickly because I have really curly hair, but even though I remember having a Zhu Zhu pet because of this unfortunate event I loved it.
As someone who had six guinea pigs I can tell you that it is much cleaner to give your child a Zhu Zhu pet than an actual hamster or guinea pig.
Eventually though the company’s original toy line was discontinued in 2012 and there was a study as well that revealed that they contained high levels of toxic chemicals.
But going forward if the Zhu Zhu were brought back they should definitely not be made with toxic chemicals, but they should instead be every small child’s first little fake pet.
