How often have you wrote down an idea for a book and then closed into your bedside table drawer? How many times have you seen a copywriter job offer, but you were too afraid to apply because you don’t have the experience required?

Time to wipe out your fear and start doing what you love, writing, and earn what you deserve, money & fame!

1. Start a Blog

The first way you can start earning money from your writings is to start a blog.

Opening a self-hosted blog might require an initial investment, but it will give you all the freedom you need to monetize your content.

It is pretty easy to do, buy a custom domain, a hosting plan, choose your niche, theme, and, of course, start posting your content!

There are different ways to earn from your blog. You can publish sponsored posts, put ads on your pages, or promote products (yours or of other companies).

Creating a blog is a long term project. You must work hard to create high-quality, engaging content, promote your blog on social media to drive traffic, and with time you will have some loyal followers who trust you and buy your products or services.

So why should you choose this option to make money from your writings?

By having your blog, you will have the freedom to choose the topics you want, write at your own terms, and have your unique style. No one will tell you what products to promote or if you must have ads.

There are bloggers making six-figures a month by promoting other people’s products with affiliate marketing on their blog.

Of course, it requires time and dedication, in particular, to drive traffic to your content but it will be worth it!

2. Write an eBook

Time to pull out of that drawer all your notes and turn your fantastic ideas into Amazon’s bestseller!

It can be a novel, a kids’ book, or a practical guide on creating something.

Publishing your eBook, it’s free and easy with Kindle Direct Publishing.

All you have to do is go on the Kindle Direct Publishing page, create an Amazon account if you don’t already have one and follow the instruction to upload your book and images.

You can earn up to 70% for an eBook and 60% for a paperback book.

3. Paid to Write Content Marketplaces

Content marketplaces are great for beginners. I’ve started my writing career working for a couple of them.

They offer a wide range of articles to write; you can choose from a list of titles and write your piece following the customer instructions.

Pros of content marketplaces:

  • They accept almost everyone; you must pass an admission test;
  • There is a wide variety of topics, you can write about cats one day and about travel the day after;
  • The marketplace handles all the payments, so you don’t have to worry about unpaying clients;
  • If you don’t like a topic, you are not obliged to write about it.
  • The customer will tell you all the specifications, including the number of words;
  • The more you write high-quality pieces, the more points you earn and get paid higher.

Cons of paid to write websites:

  • The pay is meager, in particular, if you are a beginner, your paid per word ratio will be poor;
  • You need to write a lot to make a living;
  • If the client rejects your work you don’t get paid and just wasted your time;
  • You get paid for words, not for the actual time it took you to find information and write the piece.How to make money writing about what you love.

4. Freelancing

Freelancing is a broad category, and a lot of different writing jobs can fill in here. Freelancing is usually for people who already have some experience in content creation and copywriting; this doesn’t mean you can’t fake it until you make it and propose yourself as a freelance writer.

How do you start freelancing? You can start a personal website where you promote your services. Keep your site focused on a few niches because companies hiring freelancers usually wants to hire a writer expert on a specific topic rather than someone who writes about everything and actually knows nothing about what he is writing.

Then, apply to freelance websites like:

  • Fiverr;
  • Freelancer;
  • Upwork.

Set your fee and promote your services on social media. Using these platforms allows you to reach a wider audience, and don’t worry about payments.

Job boards like ProBlogger are a great way to find writing opportunities as a freelancer. You can work from remote anywhere. Make sure your profile meets the customer needs and apply.

Another way to find jobs online is cold pitching. Cold pitching means you are proposing your services for the first time to a new client. You have no previous relationship with the company. It can be a blogger, an online magazine, or a business that has its own website.

Some online magazines have a page with the requirements you must provide to be considered as a new writer for them.

For example, you must introduce yourself, prove why you should be an excellent match for them, and provide some pieces already published elsewhere.

5. Write a Course

Are you an expert about something? Well, even if you are not, you can write a few pieces and put them together in a course to teach others.

You can sell your classes on platforms like Teachable or Udemy.

Otherwise, you can sell your course on your website or blog if you created one, as I explained before.

Creating a course is similar to writing a book. Each chapter has a topic but, contrary to the book, a course focus on practical things.

You can teach others how to cook something, take care of their garden, or build a house.

As I said, you don’t need to be an expert as long as you do some research and create useful content.

Of course, I don’t have to add Medium to this list because you are already here. You might also want to check my piece about what I’ve learned in these two months on the platform.
