5 Brainless Habits That Make Your Life Miserable
Reconsider these mindless behaviors if you are feeling stressed and moody lately.
We often get into negative habits that affect our mental and physical health. We get these habits when we try to solve other problems. We think they are helping us cope with other problems, but they actually make our lives more miserable.
We are often unaware of the consequences of these habits, which we deem irrelevant or too small to notice. Or sometimes we think they are good for our health, which is not the case.
Here are the five brainless habits that make your life more miserable.
#1. Staying hungry for longer
The common advice we often get from others is to skip a meal to lose weight, which has the worst consequences.
We also delay eating when we are hungry because we have to finish the tasks. Finishing a task within a deadline is a great thing, but skipping meals for it is a brainless habit that makes our life miserable.
Our bodies give us signs when it needs something, such as it triggers hunger, thirst, and other signs that demand actions. When we feel hungry, our body is low on sugar and certain other things. Low sugar in our bodies triggers the release of cortisol hormones that cause stress.
According to Heather Kent, a Canadian psychotherapist, the lack of sugar and energy makes us feel sluggish, bored, irritable, and moody, and it robs us of our tolerance.
Lack of sugar also distorts our attention span, disturbs our concentration, and negatively affects our performance. This situation ultimately leads to frustration.
Missing meals is not the best thing for losing weight or finishing a task. You can’t achieve your goals this way.
Instead, you should consult a nutritionist to lose weight, and they will recommend a proper diet to burn your fat-burning process.
#2. Working and staying all day inside
I personally don’t do it. I have made a habit of taking a brisk walk outside before starting my work.
When I miss the walk, I feel bored and irritated that whole day. I feel a sort of burden that I can get rid of easily.
Research has shown that you can reduce your irritation by improving your morning routines. Zinn suggests that going for a morning walk outside and exposing yourself to sunlight and fresh air can significantly improve your mood.
He even suggests that you take your walk before taking coffee or tea. Because taking caffeine right after getting up can stimulate stress.
#3. Checking notifications on your phone instantly.
I had a habit of checking my phone right after opening my eyes in the morning, which would cause me a headache, which is normal for most of us.
But apart from that, checking your notification instantly can also be a great cause of distraction. With each notification you check, you get distracted from your work.
I have faced this situation, and it has wasted a lot of my time. This would lead to time mismanagement, and I would be unable to finish a task worth one-hour time in three hours.
Timothy Jeder, a psychologist, says that checking notifications instantly amid working can lead to distraction, frustration, and irritability.
The best thing to avoid checking your phone notifications instantly and making your day more productive is to put your phone in “do not disturb” mode while working.
#4. Doomscrolling on your digital gadgets
At this age of social media, misinformation and conspiracy theories are making rounds all the time. We are also amid a global pandemic that has disrupted normal life and ushered an era of uncertainty and fear.
Watching and listening to the news about pandemics, financial crises, and other negative things emotionally drain and isolate us from society, and we feel caught in the unknown fear and loss.
According to psychologists, to avoid emotional draining and frustration, one should limit consuming such news once a day for information purposes only.
Since the pandemic has occurred, I have limited consumption news about the things that offer a global threat, and I also don’t indulge in other conspiracy theories that make me more frustrated and depressed.
And this act has proved that I am happy and relaxed being ignorant about such news. If you wish to live a happier life, don’t watch the news all the time.
#5. Watching bothersome shows before bedtime
A year ago, I watched various crime shows and often horror movies right before bedtime. Out of curiosity, the movie would take me right in the middle of the night and waste my sleep time.
After finishing late movies, I would often feel uncomfortable sleeping. Horror movies would make me stay awake all night.
The emotionally taxing shows make us more depressed and ruin our mood, and it shay away the sleep from our eyes.
This habit hugely impacted my daily routines and my productivity. Less productivity would lead to more tension, depression, and a sense of loss.
So, I brought a change in life and left watching movies at night that were emotionally taxing me. Instead, I have changed it by watching funny movies or shorter clips that end happily and quickly.
I also read before bedtime, and I have tested it that reading is the best sleeping pill before bedtime.
