5 Best Films I’ve Watched in 2023

Photo by Krists Luhaers on Unsplash

As a movie buff, I enjoy trying different genres each year. I also enjoy keeping movie diaries, writing lists for myself, and recommending films to my friends and family. While 2023 was not great for the number of films I have watched, we can say that “quality is more important than quantity.”

And here, I created a list of the best films I had watched in 2023 and I think everyone should watch them sooner or later. Let’s get started :)

1. Inside Out

Photo from IMDB

Watching Inside Out was an absolute rollercoaster of feelings and a big emotional party for my brain! 🎢✨

Seriously, you should check this piece of art soon, and here is why it is fantastic.

First off, the whole concept is fabulous. Imagine your emotions are characters living inside your head and running a show for your life. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are the members of your emotions, and as a team, they play your life. They live inside your heads and control how you react to things.

The characters are super cool. Joy is always happy, as the name says, and Sadness is kinda adorable. They go on this adventure inside a girl named Riley’s mind, which is like a wild ride. You won’t believe an animated movie could make you feel so many things, but it does.

For me, one of the best parts of the movie was its colours. It is like a party for the eyes — lots of fun to watch.

But what got me was how it is not for just kinds. It is all about growing up and dealing with all the stuff during our childhood and teenage periods and how they affect our emotions and decisions. I laughed, got teary, and felt I understood more about life.

Overall, Inside Out was more than just a movie; it was like a friend who took me on a journey of feelings. Pick this one for the next movie night, and you will see what I mean.

My favourite quote from the film:

Do you ever look at someone and wonder, ‘What is happening inside their head?

- Joy

2. Oppenheimer

Photo from IMDB

Watching Oppenheimer was like “whoa” for me. It was like stepping back in time.

Oppenheimer focuses on J. Robert Oppenheimer, a key figure in developing the atomic bomb during WW II. Cillian Murphy plays Oppenheimer’s role, and let me tell you that he rocks it. It is like he became Oppenheimer — the glasses, vibe, and everything.

What is astonishing is how he makes scientific facts not feel dull. He talks about atomic bomb things like he is telling a story, not giving a lecture.

And oh, the emotions! When Oppenheimer goes through tough decisions in moments, you feel it because of Cillian’s acting magic. You are right there with him, figuring out this crazy bomb situation.

Oppenheimer is the real deal if you are into excellent actors making history come alive. It is like having a front-row seat to an acting masterclass.

My favourite quote from the film:

Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

- Oppenheimer

3. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar

Photo from IMDB

This film had an extra sprinkle of magic, and why? It has got that Wes Anderson touch.

The film is based on a story by Roald Dahl. Henry Sugar is a guy who discovers this crazy secret about seeing without using his eyes. Imagine that, visiting with your mind! It is like magic but without a wand.

The story has a mix of adventure and life lessons style. Henry goes from being a regular boy to someone who discovers a whole new way to explore the world. It is like a self-discovery trip that feels both fun and deep.

And, oh, Roald Dahl’s storytelling is at the next level. You get caught up in the words, and before you know it, you are hooked. It is not just about the plot but also about the details — the little things that make you smile and say, “Ah, that is so Wes Anderson!”

If you are into Wes Anderson style and want to trip into this magical story told by Roald Dahl, then this film is for you.

My favourite quote from the film:

I can see without my eyes. It’s a mental eye that sees things differently.

- Henry Sugar

4. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse

Photo from IMDB

This film feels like it is a warm hug in a movie form.

It is based on beautifully illustrated books. The characters are simple but super loveable and adorable. You have got the boy, the mole, the fox, and the horse — all on this incredible journey of friendship and self-discovery.

The story is like a life lesson for me. The boy and his unusual friends share the wisdom that hits you right in the feelings. It is like having your guide through the ups and downs of life.

Illustrations are top-notch. They are like a work of art brought to life. Each scene is visually stunning; you can almost feel the sunshine, softness, or the mole’s fur.

Best part? It is not just for the kids. The messages are universal, and it is one of the movies that can make you smile or shed a happy tear. It is like a cozy blanket for your heart.

So, if you are up for warmth, life lessons, and lots of love with charming characters, then this movie is a must-watch.

My favourite quote from the film:

Boy: ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ ‘Kind,’ said the boy.”

Mole: ‘What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever said?’ ‘Help,’ said the boy.

5. Avatar: The Way of Water

Photo from IMDB

Avatar: The Way of Water was a visual feast for my eyes.

First thing first, storytelling. The film is not just about pretty pictures. It has a gripping storyline takes you to another world right from the first minute. Each character has its own story and you watch it smoothly during the film.

Speaking of the visuals, let’s talk about 3D effects. Mind-Blowing. Seriously. It feels like you can reach out and touch these fantastical creatures and landscapes. Watching this film in 3D takes the whole experience to a new dimension (literally). Or at least for me :)

The movie is not all about visuals and colours — a considerable message exists in the film. The movie makes you think about nature, the environment, and all that good stuff.

If you are up for a cinematic adventure and visuals, this film is for you.

My favourite quote from the film:

It is hard to fill a cup that is already full.

- Neytiri
