The Reason I Quit Alcohol at a Young Age

An unexpected event altered my life forever, allowing me to embrace sobriety and move from struggle to strength.

It had been an exhausting and stressful day, one of those days that make you crave a release. My friends suggested we head to the local pub, boasting 24-hour service. Our goal was a stress relief and have some fun.

Usually, I had the self-control to stop drinking before getting drunk, but on that fateful night, I lost control. The memories are blurry, but I vaguely recall my good friend driving me to his home and comforting me.

This lovely mate, a bachelor with inherited wealth, had a spacious home he graciously opened to me. Despite the comforts of his house and his stability in a regular job, something nagged at me the next day.

I assumed it was a typical hangover, but no physical symptoms existed. Instead, a swarm of butterflies fluttered relentlessly in my stomach.

Suddenly, thoughts of my pregnant wife flooded my mind. In just two weeks, we were expecting our first child. The guilt of not spending the previous night with her weighed heavily on me throughout the day. I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease and restlessness.

In those days, mobile phones were not invented yet. But we had a landline at home. From my office, I tried to call our home number, but there was no answer. Anxiety gnawed at me even more. After work, I rushed to catch the train, desperate to return home.

As I entered the house, an ominous silence greeted me. My wife would usually be waiting by the door, eager to hear about my day.

But she didn’t open the door. With a spare key hidden outside, I let myself in. I called out her name, but there was no response. The butterflies in my stomach intensified, and my heart raced.

In a panic, I searched every room, my eyes landing on mysterious stains resembling dried blood on the carpet. Confusion filled my mind, and fear gripped my heart.

In a desperate sprint, I raced to our caring neighbor’s house, Elena and Robert. Robert was not at home, but Elena’s tears welled up in her eyes as she embraced me, offering congratulations mixed with an attempt at a smile. Bewildered, I couldn’t comprehend her words.

Elena explained that my wife’s water had broken that night, so her husband rushed my wife to the hospital. They performed an emergency cesarean birth to save the baby and my wife’s life from medical complications. Robert was still in the hospital to support my wife.

Determined to see my wife and meet our newborn, I hailed a taxi and headed to the hospital. Stepping into the room, I found my wife under the vigilant care of healthcare professionals.

A nurse, cradling our tiny miracle, offered her congratulations. She assured me that both mother and baby were in good health, but my wife needed rest to recover from the operation.

As I held our baby in my arms, a profound wave of emotions washed over me, transforming my world. In that instant, all my worries and stresses seemed insignificant. However, my guilt lingered, demanding a resolution. I needed to talk to my wife to seek her understanding and forgiveness.

Thankfully, as the day progressed, my wife opened her eyes and recognized me. I frankly poured out my heart and soul, explaining the previous night's events. Incredibly, my stoic wife understood and accepted my apology. Her love and compassion shined through.

Since that life-altering night, I made a solemn vow to myself, a promise that would forever change the course of my life.

I made the courageous decision to embrace a life free from alcohol, not only for the sake of my own well-being but for the happiness and stability of the family we had created together.

The profound experience I had gone through taught me the immeasurable value of being fully present and taking responsibility for my actions.

From that moment forward, I wholeheartedly committed to a teetotal lifestyle, and in doing so, I discovered a powerful self and became the best version of myself for my loved ones.
