If you are reading this, the chances are high that you sleep on a ‘normal’, thick, and soft mattress. That’s what everyone else seems to be sleeping on, so it must be the best, right? Think again, because we found some dark secrets about our mattresses, and a way better alternative.
Let’s start with why. Why did you decide to research this, and why would you even want to know this? First, we simply wanted to know if sleeping on a harder surface, that’s more like a floor would be healthier. That interest developed as we found some different alternatives to sleeping on a modern mattress.

Besides that, we know that there are many things wrong in our society, that they simply don’t want us to know about. So as we thought about the fact that sleeping on the floor might be healthier, we simply decided to research a bit. We quickly found out that we were right, but also wrong.
The first thing we found was an alternative to our mattresses, called ‘futons’. Those are thin Japanese mattresses, on which most people in Japan sleep. They are easy to clean, portable, and cheap. Originally they are placed on tatami mats, which are hard mats that feel like a floor.

Here is a list of benefits of futons we made:
- Child friendly: low base height = close to the ground (prevents them from hurting themselves when they fall + no need for expensive safety rails)
- Space saving: flexible = easy to roll up (suitable for small spaces + perfect for multi-use rooms)
- Transportable
- Better for back health (it’s firm = aligns the spine)
- Hygienic: Transportable = clean the floor easier + could be stored away (less prone to dust)
- Affordable: cheaper than mattresses = great value for money (a no-brainer)
- Maintenance-free: no springs, no hassle (minimalist)
- Convenient
- Versatility: futons could generally be configured into a bed, daybed (raised backrest) as well as a couch position = the ultimate furniture is small living spaces
Those are a lot of benefits, so why not immediately buy one?
To be honest, that was my original plan. But then I realized I knew some people who had been to Japan, and who could tell me about the experience of sleeping on a futon.

I asked them about it, and I got the response I was expecting. They told me they slept great on them. But they also informed me that they weren’t much better than our mattresses, and it really didn’t matter.
But that’s where our other research comes in, about modern mattresses.
After searching for a bit, we found out that most mattresses are made with toxic chemicals. That’s partly because they have to be fire resistant, and also just to make them comfortable.
Think about this, you spent about 8 hours sleeping. That means you are touching unhealthy chemicals for at least 8 hours a day. Add the unhealthy chemicals you touch during the day, and it’s no wonder there are so many health crises.

The next reason you might want to consider these mattresses has everything to do with your spine. When you sleep on soft mattresses, your back spine bends with your mattress, and it just adjusts its shape. On a thinner mattress with a hard surface under it, your spine stays aligned, and your back can truly rest.
