4 Things I Do to Keep My Life Meaningful
I am a strong believer in living a purposeful life. That is not to say that you need to have your purpose scoped out perfectly, but I do think it is essential for our fulfillment.
To know that you have lived a life that has meant something to yourself and others is vital. After all, when we come to the end of our time here on earth, it is the meaningful things we have done that will continue to exist.
Our meaningful actions live on after us. That may be the kind words you gave to someone or the book you wrote. These are the things that really matter when all is said and done.
However, our pursuit of a meaningful life can often be challenging. First of all, the world we live in is becoming more artificial day by day. We scroll through the lives of others instead of living our own. And google search gives us too many answers to know what is true or not.
So, in my quest to live a meaningful, I carry out a few things every day to ensure I have done so. For me, living a meaningful life is not one that takes years to build. We can live meaningfully in the present. It is the sum of the meaningful things we do that leads to a life of fulfilment.
So, here are the small yet powerful things I do daily to keep my life meaningful.
Daily Learning
Before doing anything, I try my best to learn something new. I often do this by diving into a book straight away. I read with the intent to learn something or at the very least gain further insight.
You will find many benefits to learning something new every day, but not many lists consider a meaningful life. However, upon carrying this habit out for a while now, I think it is one of the best benefits.
Life can become routine, and we all live within our own bubbles. Unfortunately, we spend most of our lives carrying out repetitive tasks like well-oiled machines. And this leads us to live without paying much attention to what we are doing and potentially learning.
Learning allows us to feel like we are growing, and that is the goal of life in some sense. To experience it and grow old with it in knowledge and wisdom. Actively learning every morning gives me a chance to feel like I have taken one step forward.
Daily learning also makes me feel useful. By learning more we are able to gift others with our knowledge, and hopefully be of useful service.
A Healthy Breakfast
The second thing I do is have a healthy breakfast. Before doing so, I used to take breakfast for granted. I would find myself skipping it or grabbing something small on the way out.
I can imagine many people still do this despite the constant health warnings of missing breakfast. Once I implemented a healthy breakfast into my life, my outlook on the rest of the day changed.
The first meaningful thing I noticed was my attitude towards myself. Taking time to care for your body is a good way to affirm to yourself that you care about your life. I always felt like my life was precious, but I never treated it as such. I would constantly skip breakfast, miss out on sleep and not exercise.
Having a healthy breakfast is my way of telling myself I care. And that brings a whole new meaning to my life. And this leads me to my second point. Knowing that I actively care about my life gives me meaning for the day ahead. It helps me feel prepared for the tasks ahead of me and puts me in the frame of mind I need.
Writing
To have a hobby like writing makes me feel very privileged. Not only do I get to practice my writing skills, but I also get to share a message with many people. Writing is a good way to get all my thoughts out onto one page and acts as a great outlet.
I have also found writing to have healing powers. For example, when my grandmother passed away, writing about it gave me a sense of peace. Also, when I was struggling with productivity, writing made me feel much better.
Our hobbies allow us to express our inner selves and give us time to be free. A meaningful life is not just about the things you do for others, it is also about what you do for yourself.
Writing gives me the perfect balance between the two. It allows me to hopefully put a smile on someone’s face or impact their lives. But it also allows me to destress and feel the freedom all of us need.
Time to Relax
Finally, we all need to have time to be away from everything. And I mean everything. No social media, movies or books, just time to hear yourself think. Part of living a meaningful life is knowing what you want and learning more about who you are.
I find much of life is about learning who we want to be. As a young individual, I am still trying to navigate my desires and ambitions for the long life I have ahead of me on earth. I often find myself changing my mind and identifying areas where my self-talk is somewhat confused.
Time to relax allows me a space to evaluate the person I am and who I want to be. And this brings about a new meaning to my life because it gives me a chance to know who I am.
I do not expect to be the same person I am today in ten years. However, I hope the person I am in ten years is still growing and learning more about life. And my time to relax allows me to do just that.
Closing Thoughts
Living a life of purpose does not mean you have it all figured out. Life is about figuring it out as you go along. However, it does mean taking the necessary actions to ensure that you are living as meaningfully as you can be.
That means making sure you act in a way that brings the most meaning to your own life. Do the things that make you want to live another day more often than not. For me, that is learning, eating well, writing and taking time out for self-reflection. For you, it may be something else.
Whatever habits you implement into your life this year, ensure they lead you to a more meaningful path.
