4 Skills of Highly Spiritual People

3# You are not attached to people or things

Spirituality is a very personal journey.

It’s not always an easy journey. You go through a lot of pain but you also gain so much strength, wisdom, experience, and an understanding of people’s emotions and why they react the way they do.

Spiritual have some skills that not many have these days.

Spiritual (or smart) people are very conscious in their daily lives, while most people are unconscious about what they say and do.

When you’re spiritual people, you get tired of all the nonsense that doesn’t fulfill your soul’s purpose. You’d rather be home and read a book than go out for the weekend and do things you will regret.

1# You Are Very Self-Aware.

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.”

— Carl Jung.

I’ve always been spiritual since I was a young teen. I started early while going through moody phases in my life. Now that I’m older, I’m very self-aware of what I say and do.

“Should I say this?” and “Do I really need to react to this person’s rude behavior towards me? No, not really.”

When you become self-aware, you start to look back at how your day went and how your words and behavior have affected people in a positive or negative way.

You notice your bad habits quickly and you don’t get mad if someone corrects you because you can see the mistakes after the person gave you feedback.

You have the ability to introspect and understand your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors on a deeper level. Whether you’re spiritual or not, self-aware people are constantly striving to know themselves better.

Here’s an example.

  • You are very aware that you can be impatient so you decide to work on developing patience in various situations. If someone tells you, “You’re very impatient.” you reply, “Yes, I’m very impatient and it’s one of my weaknesses that I need to work on.” — You don’t get defensive, you stick up for having both weak side and strong side.

How to apply.

  • Meditation: Regular meditation practice can help you become more aware of your thoughts and emotions. Take a few minutes each day to sit in silence and observe your inner world.
  • Journaling: Keep a journal to record your thoughts and feelings. This can help you identify your bad habits and the skills you should work on.
  • Mindfulness: Practice being present in the moment. Pay attention to your thoughts and emotions without judgment. Just observe, that’s all. This will help you become more aware of what’s going on inside your inner world.

2# You’re Very Forgiving.

“Forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a constant attitude.”

— Martin Luther King Jr.

The more spiritual and authentic you become, the easier it becomes for you to forgive people. You forgive so you can be at peace with yourself. You forgive as a way of letting go of the anger that hurts your mental health.

It doesn’t mean you never forget what happened and how that painful moment made you feel at that time. You just choose not to live in the past.

Holding on to anger, resentment, or grudge can take you on a dark path, emotionally and spiritually. That is why you choose to forgive.

Forgiveness is healing.

When you become spiritual, you understand the healing power of forgiveness and apply it in your daily life with ease.

Here’s an example.

  • Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison and forgave his captors during his release. His forgiveness and commitment to reconciliation played an important role in South Africa.

How to apply.

  • Letting Go: Release the negative emotions associated with past hurts. Understand that forgiveness is for your benefit, not the person you are forgiving. You get the peace inside yourself.
  • Empathy: Put yourself in the shoes of the person who has wronged you. Try to understand their perspective and the circumstances that led to their actions.
  • Self-Forgiveness: Don’t forget to forgive yourself for your own mistakes and shortcomings. Self-compassion is an important part of forgiveness.

3# You Are Not Attached To People or Things.

“You only lose what you cling to.”

— Buddha.

Non-attachment is the ability to detach from material things, expectations, outcomes, and people. You understand that attachment can lead to suffering and stop you in your spiritual growth.

Simply being attached to people or things will only give you disappointment, suffering, and lots of pain. It’s a bad habit to have.

When you stop being attached to people or things, you become more free and peaceful inside yourself. You’re free from worries, false assumptions, and the need to buy things you don’t need in your life.

A couple enjoys a healthy, loving relationship, but they understand the importance of not being overly attached. They give each other space to pursue individual interests and maintain a sense of independence.

Here’s an example.

  • You have great relationships with your family, friends, and significant partner, but you also understand the importance of not being overly attached to them. You give each other space to pursue individual interests and maintain a sense of independence. You stop buying the things you don’t need, which means you’re not attached to materialistic stuff in a needy or obsessive way.

How to apply.

  • Simplicity: Simplify your life by decluttering your physical and mental space. Let go of possessions that no longer serve you.
  • Acceptance: Embrace the impermanence of life. Understand that everything is temporary, and attaching yourself to things or people can lead to suffering.
  • Living in the Present: Focus on the present moment rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. This can help you detach from unnecessary concerns.

4# You Are Highly Intuitive.

“Intuition is the whisper of the soul.” — Jiddu Krishnamurti.

Intuition is the inner knowing or gut feeling that guides you in making decisions and dealing with life’s challenges. You can easily sense a bad vibe when you meet someone.

You can easily sense if something bad is going to happen. You notice the red flags in someone. You make decisions based on what feels right for you and not what someone thinks is right for you.

You are aware that a toxic person in your life is trying to convince you to make a decision that feels very wrong for you. You feel pressured to do it but you say no anyway even if it means the toxic person becomes mad.

Making decisions based on your intuition always makes you feel better because you did the right thing for yourself. You trust your own inner voice.

Here’s an example.

  • During a job interview, you get this gut feeling that the company is not the right fit for you, even though everything seems fine on the surface. You decide to trust your intuition by not accepting the job offer, which later proves to be the right decision for you.

How to apply.

  • Silence the Mind: To access your intuition, quiet your mind through practices like meditation or deep breathing. When your mind is calm, your intuitive voice becomes more easy to hear.
  • Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to physical sensations and emotions when making decisions. Your body often provides clear signals about what feels right or wrong.
  • Practice Patience: Intuitive insights may not come immediately. Be patient and open to receiving guidance when the time is right.

A Little Reminder for the Ending.

Not every spiritual person thinks the same way.

We may have similar minds yet still have different thoughts and ideas.

Spirituality means different things for every spiritual person you meet.

Living life authentically is what spiritual people have in common, but it’s not just that. Self-awareness, forgiveness, non-attachment, and intuition are also 4 important skills that many spiritual people have in common.

I will end the article with this quote that many have probably read before:

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

— Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.
