4 Simple Ways To Highlight Business Value In Your Cybersecurity CV
This can be a game-changer for your Cybersecurity Profile!

I have reviewed thousands of Cybersecurity CVs in my career.
From senior level CISO positions to beginner level Cybersecurity engineers .. I have had the good fortune of interviewing all of them
After a while, they begin to blur into one another, especially when you have dozens of CVs to review for a hot position
Except for a few.
What makes these Cybersecurity CVs stand out?
One simple thing.
They showcase the business value they bought to the company from their cybersecurity activities
That is enough to make anyone sit up and take notice
Let us take a look at a few samples on which you can do this TODAY to improve your Cybersecurity profile
1 — Speak The Language Of Results
Too many professionals copy past their job description into a CV and expect people to be impressed.
News Flash: I don't need to know what a cloud security engineer does .. I already know that from the job title.
Instead, tell me what results you brought to the organization
Let us take an example
BEFORE: “Managed cybersecurity protocols.”
AFTER: “Strengthened cybersecurity measures, achieving a 40% reduction in system vulnerabilities.”
or
BEFORE: “Introduced two-factor authentication”
AFTER: “Rolled out two-factor authentication for all user accounts, significantly enhancing account security and reducing unauthorized access incidents by over 50%.”
A simple change tells me your actions had a direct impact on the security posture of the company!
2. Highlight Problem-Solving Skills
CISOs and Hiring managers LOVE people who can solve problems
Cybersecurity is a stressful job already, and someone who can make our lives easier always stands out
Here are a few examples
BEFORE: “Noticed an increase in phishing attacks and informed the IT team.”
AFTER: “Identified a surge in phishing attacks as a critical vulnerability. I initiated and led a comprehensive anti-phishing campaign, incorporating employee education, regular simulated phishing exercises, and the deployment of an AI-based phishing detection system. This multifaceted approach reduced phishing success rates by over 70%, enhancing our overall cybersecurity resilience.”
OR
BEFORE: “Developed a proprietary data analysis tool to help security insights.”
AFTER: “Developed and launched a cutting-edge data analysis tool, enabling real-time insights that drove a 20% increase in decision-making efficiency and a 15% rise in overall productivity.”
3. Connect The Dots Between Tech and Business Goals
Always try to show how you helped the business perform
Too often, Cybersecurity is perceived as a blocker, and this will help show that you are a team player
Let us take a look at a few examples
BEFORE: “Implemented a security testing process for our web applications.”
AFTER: “Implemented an automated security testing system, increasing software deployment speed by 50% and directly contributing to a 20% faster time-to-market for new products.”
ONE MORE
BEFORE: “Monitored network traffic for security threats.”
AFTER: “Developed and implemented an advanced network monitoring solution that leveraged AI to identify and mitigate security threats in real time. This system reduced the incidence of security breaches by 60%, significantly cutting down potential downtime costs and enhancing our reputation as a reliable business partner.”
4. Use Accessible Language
No one likes excessive tech jargon.
A CV is a place to show your value and not drown the reader in abbreviations and buzzwords.
Cut down the tech lingo and focus more on what you did:
BEFORE: “Utilized machine learning models for predictive analysis in security incidents.”
AFTER: “Leveraged advanced technology (machine learning) to predict potentially suspicious behavior, enabling us to detect security incidents and improving our security posture.”
One more!
BEFORE: “Deployed RBAC on enterprise systems for better IAM.”
AFTER: “Introduced role-based access controls to our systems, ensuring that employees only have access to the information necessary for their jobs. This streamlined our internal processes and significantly reduced the risk of unauthorized data access.”
I hope you found this helpful and saw that by slightly changing how you highlight your cybersecurity activities .. your CV can become an awesome showcase of your business value to future employers.
Good luck on your journey and Cybersecurity career!
