4 Simple Ways I Pandemic-Proofed My Life
Here’s how you can do it too
The blow of the pandemic was hands down unlike any we’ve ever seen. It’s affected millions of people personally and financially.
In the middle of all this chaos, you can’t help but wonder what the future will hold for you. What can you do now to withstand the effects of the pandemic and prepare for the future?
No one can predict with certainty what tomorrow will bring. One day life feels like smooth sailing, the next day you feel like you’re being tossed around in many directions.
What do you do when life’s waters are choppy? You can do either of two things — succumb to the reality of life and do nothing or build an imaginary metal shield around yourself to become stronger. If you do the latter, you’ll be ahead of the game and more prepared in the future.
Some of the effects of the pandemic are outside of your control, but there are ways you can be in control of your life to help you weather the storm.
Here are 4 simple things you can do now to make the most of life while we’re still in the pandemic.
Take Care of Your Health
When the first wave of pandemic hit back in March, one of the ways I pandemic-proofed my life was that I started taking better care of my health. Getting my immunity strong was my top priority. And as we’re still in the heat of the pandemic, I take my health seriously.
Here are some things you can do today to maintain your physical and mental health.
- Eat a fiber-rich diet that includes fruits and vegetables every day
- Maintain your gut flora by eating probiotic rich foods such as yogurt
- Drink plenty of fluids (inclusive of Vitamin C powder supplements and herbal teas)
- Get regular physical exercise
Make your health a central focus in your life by adopting the habits that will strengthen your health. Take control of your health and make sure that your body is as healthy as you can make it and that you’re in optimal shape.
Stay active and incorporate some form of physical activity every day. A healthy and strong body will help ensure that your immune system will function at its best to protect you in case you ever catch the Covid-19 virus.
Maintain a Positive Outlook
It’s easy to succumb to feeling down during the pandemic, especially during dark winter months. The pressure of the pandemic can wear you down.
Positive emotions help build strength and resilience. Being more positive can reduce stress and boost your well-being. To keep yourself from feeling lonely and isolated, connect with people that motivate and inspire you.
For example, you can join a virtual group of people who share your interests. Or you can connect with people who are pursuing similar goals and share a similar journey.
Staying positive and engaging in activities that bring me joy is one of the ways I cope with pandemic. For example, I maintain a positive outlook by being connected with other writers like me. I’m part of a group of encouraging and supportive writers that nurture and inspire me. I feel like I’m part of a whole and it gives me a sense of belonging. Together, we help each other grow and become better writers.
Staying away from negative emotions is just as important. To that end, stay away from toxic people — they will drain you down. While you can’t avoid them completely, at least you can minimize how much time you spend and interact with them. Toxic people will not only take away from your positivity focus, but also steer you away in the wrong direction.
Prepare For a More Secure Financial Future
When it comes to adopting a money mindset during the pandemic, you have to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
Many people, including me, have felt a financial pinch since the beginning of the pandemic. And with the way the economy is now, it’s hard to predict when it’ll bounce back to normal. That’s why you should handle your cash flow wisely to help you secure a better financial future.
Expenses can creep up unexpectedly, especially if you have a family and kids. You may have hit a financial bump on the road. But if you take financial responsibility now, you’ll have a better and more secure future when things go back to normal.
One of the smart things you can do now is to start saving some money for a rainy day. One of the ways my family and I pandemic-proofed our financial life is that we started putting away small amounts of cash every month (it varies from month to month).
Depending on your financial situation, you can decide how much cash you’re able to put away at the end of each month. For example, one month, it can be $50, another month you can do $25, or even as little as $10. It doesn’t have to be set in stone — the amount can vary every month.
What’s important is that you make the habit to put away a little bit of money and do it every month.
Use Your Time Wisely
Time is money. Just because we’re in the pandemic, doesn’t mean you should waste your time. If all you do in your spare time is lay on the couch and binge-watch movies on Netflix, you’re not using your time to your advantage.
Think about how you can leverage your time — maybe you can learn a new skill or explore a new side hustle. There are so many freelancing work-from-home opportunities out there. Maybe there is one that can be a fit for you.
Invest your time into learning something new each day and growing in your knowledge. The more time you put in towards your personal growth, the better the future will look out for you.
Since the pandemic imposed new limitations on my life, I started looking more into work-from-home side hustle opportunities. I also dipped my toes into writing and started writing on Medium. During the day I homeschool my two children and use the rest of my time to write.
The Bottom Line
You can’t change the course of the pandemic, and no one knows with any certainty how long it will be. While you can’t protect yourself from unforeseen life events, some actions and steps you take now will help protect you from the ravaging effects of the pandemic. Focus on the present and on things that are within your control, and you’ll be more prepared in the future.
The actions you can do now are:
- Take care of your health
- Maintain a positive outlook
- Prepare for a more secure financial future
- Use your time wisely
