4 Shows On Netflix To Lift Up Your Spirits

I think we all need it!

Another tough day? Yeah, me too. Every day, I look for somewhere to escape and something to cheer me up. Video games don’t do the trick: too much violence. Books are great, but I can’t seem to find one that speaks to me. Music works for a while, but nothing is as efficient as sitting on the couch with my dog and watching something light and happy.

I often rewatch the same shows, because I know they will make me feel better. It doesn’t matter if I know the story already. Those are my comfort shows, I find peace between their lines.

Derry Girls

I didn’t know what to expect when I click on the show for the first time. I thought “please don’t be another high school drama”, and it isn’t — not really.

Derry Girls follow 4 girls and 1 boy in Londonderry, Ireland, during the war between England and Ireland. The context is not fun, and we do hear a bit about the war, but it isn’t sad. It is not the focus of the show.

The characters are fun, ridiculous, lively, and interesting. They put themselves in crazy and stupid situations, and it’s always a pleasure to watch them find ways out of it — or at least try.

The show is only 12 episodes (2 seasons), each of them being a gem. The third and final season will be released in April, and I cannot wait!

Community

Most people already know Community — it aired in 2009! Like many sitcoms, it follows a group of friends as they attend community college. The plot is simple, the characters are easy to understand, so it leaves room for writing. It’s not about being clever with plot twists and drama, but being clever with puns and situations.

The first 3 seasons are the “real” community. Season 4 and 5 lose a few of the main characters, and it goes downhill from there.

Community is innovative and rewards (or mocks) us for paying attention. They explore possibilities, different mediums, and tons while remaining fun.

Schitt’s Creek

It took me a while to decide to watch it, and I’m sorry I didn’t watch it before. Schitt’s Creek is another ensemble sitcom, following the wealthy Rose family as they lose their assets and end up living in a motel in Schitt’s Creek.

I loved that the characters had souls. They weren’t just clichés, and easy jokes. They’re something more behind. History. Love. Family. We care for them as much as they exasperate us.

The final season was satisfying to watch, bringing most stories to a conclusion. We witness real growth in the characters and end up rooting for them.

Plus, you know, it’s funny. Not always, and not in-your-face funny, but subtle, dry. You have to deserve your funny.

The Good Place

It might not qualify as a light show, but do yourself a favor and watch it. Really. It’s smart, entertaining, educational, relevant … Sure, from time to time you’ll have to pay attention, but even if you let the philosophy wash over you and decide to be a Jason, it’s still worth your while.

There are many more shows, programs, and movies that could be part of this list. Currently, I’m watching 30 Rock, and the jury is still out. I find it both problematic and yet somewhat entertaining.

If reality TV is more your speed, I’d say to watch Love Is Blind. It’s chaotic, frustrating, and entertaining. Plus it will either make you feel good about yourself or make you feel uncomfortable with some of the things you do.

Otherwise Is It Cake? is safe, besides making me want to eat cake. Just don’t tell me who wins, I haven’t finished it yet!

What is the one program that always makes you feel better? Yes, I am very much looking for recommendations!
