4 Reasons Why I Love Money, And I Always Will
Safety first
I like money.
I need money to have a house, food, and to pay the bills. Yet, I could cover my basic needs with less money than what I make, and I know I could survive pretty well. I am a simple person and I have limited needs.
Yet, I want more.
Why is that? These are the main reasons why I find money is important in my life.
1.Fear and safety. I am afraid of not being able to face difficult situations when they arise, and the idea of having money to support myself makes me feel more comfortable. It makes me feel in control. For example, you need money to get an urgent private visit to a doctor, or surgery, and it can save your life. You need money if they steal your car, and you need a new one — it happened to me twice.
Money makes me feel safe. It’s like a parachute.
2.It gives value to my work. I have been underpaid for some time in my life, and I know how frustrating it is and how worried you can become, when you work hard and it’s never enough. Making less money than you deserve has effects even on your self-esteem. It’s as if someone told you that your value is lower than you think.
I know that asking for a good pay is very difficult for a lot of people, including me, but I have always looked for a better place to work, with a more suitable salary. Moreover, I am no longer willing to contribute to other people’s business for free, which is a request I sometimes receive.
3.My independence. This is another important aspect of my relationship with money. In Italy and in many other countries, a woman still looks for a rich man to marry. Even if I understand it, I hope I will always be able to provide for myself with the money I make. Having my own money helps me feel I can make decisions based on my feelings, and not on my weakness. I can’t be blackmailed. I feel free.
4.Choices. I can choose what to do. I can attend a course or visit an exhibition, I can improve and learn because I can afford it. Well, since I am not rich I will always check how much I spend, and go for the cheapest choice, but I know I can accomplish some of my dreams. I can change and improve what I don’t like in my life. I know that, if I am tired or stressed, I can feel a little better thanks to a massage or a haircut. I can do something for my wellbeing. I am a very lucky person.
Money will never make me happy, or give me the emotional support I need, but it helps me feel stronger. If I lose everything, I will stand and start again.
I think my dreams would be the same, and I would be the same person.
I was inspired to write about money by Sahil Patel, who helps us think what our goals and purpose in life would be without money.
