4 Important Things To Know Before Starting a New Business

Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime.

Every year, more than half a million new businesses launch across the United States. Sounds great, right?

The bad news is that many of those businesses will fail during their first year. While there can be many reasons for this, one primary reason for early business failure is many new entrepreneurs don’t fully understand what they’re taking on.

If you’ve been looking to start your own business, here are four things you need to know to beat the odds.

Frame your business as an answer to a problem

View your business venture as a solution to a problem. It doesn’t matter if it’s a common problem. Just frame your business plan to fulfill a need.

The problem could be something as simple as “There is no good pizza place in this part of town,” or “People need help self-publishing.” The answers would be “My pizza place fills a need in this part of town,” or “My knowledge of publishing can help others.”

By adopting this mindset, you focus more on the clients than yourself. Clients pick up on this. They see you appreciate them as customers — as people with a need — and they will think of your business when they want that need filled.

Tasty pizza or packaging a book about cult movies. It’s all good.

As a business owner, your goal is to be the provider of solutions to problems.

Keep your business finances separate from your personal finances

Even though you’re investing your personal money in your business, you should try to keep this money and any subsequent transactions separate from your private funds. Not only will this help you from sinking too much money into your business and accidentally threatening your personal finances. It will also help make tax time easier.

Likewise, using business funds (outside of whatever you’re regularly paying yourself) for personal reasons can make life more complicated and possibly lead you to be short on business funds when you need them the most.

Maintain a healthy work-life balance

Having more control over your work-life balance is often seen as a perk of owning your own business. The problem is that many new business owners have trouble finding that balance. They either spend too much time on the business and not enough time at home with family or taking care of their health. Or they think the business will run itself and not spend enough time keeping it healthy.

It will take some trial and error, but the goal for achieving a harmonious work-life balance should be every new business owner’s goal. Burnout is one thing if you’re working in an office somewhere. Burnout when trying to keep your business afloat could be disastrous.

Keeping burnout at bay means taking time for oneself. That said, make sure your employees get some support so they don’t burn out instead.

It’s OK to ask for help and advice

Business is nothing new. There’s no reason you need to reinvent the wheel here. There are loads of resources to draw from when planning and launching a new business. Libraries and civic organizations occasionally run small business workshops. There is no shortage of online guides.

Best yet, you could ask someone with a similar business as what you’re planning. It doesn’t have to be a competitor. You can consult with a friend in another state or another town. You’ll find most people are more than happy to offer advice and connect you with resources.

Taking the leap

When starting your new business, be smart and responsible. These tips are a good start. To summarize:

  • Look at your business as the answer to a problem.
  • Keep business and personal finances separate.
  • Maintain a harmonious work-life balance
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice.

Knowing this, anyone can launch their own business or even side hustle.

Being your own boss carries a lot of responsibility, but it also brings freedom and satisfaction.

Good luck!
