4 Fields 90% Of Developers Would Hate to Work at

Work in one of them? You can easily ask for x2 salary raise.

People don’t work solely for money. They want to work for passion and desire. They want to make the world a better place to live in. These sentiments affect Job choices people do.

It works for all, software engineers and developers included.

There are projects anyone would like to support: Wikipedia, Red Cross, charity funds, projects that fight global warming. These projects, in addition to money, give respect. Feeling that you are helping to save the Earth/humanity/world is awesome.

That feeling is worth more than money.

Another side of the medal

There are projects that people are proud to be a part of. There are other projects where people are embarrassed to admit that they work there. There are reasons for this embarrassment.

We have moral rules nobody wants to break, at least for free…

The following 4 areas have a high demand for qualified specialists. There are higher salaries than the market ones. Some developers would like to perform the same job in a different field and get x3 money.

You can choose for yourself what is better for you.

Let’s move to the list:

Weapon

Nobody wants to kill people.

But the weapon is designed to do it. So…

When a person works in the military or weapon field, he has part of the responsibility for the product. In this field product is a weapon that kills people. This responsibility is not an easy burden.

It shouldn’t be a gun or big scary rocket anymore. At the current technology level, there are dozens of ways to harm the target: biological or electronic virus, the weapon with AI, hacker attacks, etc. And the target could be a person, group, or even a whole country.

Of course, there is a man who pulls the trigger. Or one who gives the order. They are more responsible for the death weapon brings to this world. Still, people who design and create these “simple tools of war” share some responsibility with the executors.

For example, Einstein quote about his role in creating nuclear weapons:

I made one great mistake in my life when I signed a letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made. Albert Einstein

Working in the weapon development field isn’t a walk in the park. The person who agrees to this has every right to ask for more in exchange. Because most people would prefer a more peaceful field to work in.

Casino

Who wants to steal other people’s money?

The casino doesn’t do it. Still, it’s how it looks in the mind of people.

Casino proposes an honest and legit deal. You make a bet — if you win you get your money doubled. Otherwise, a person loses the bet.

The trick is in the chances. The casino always has more chances to win its client. The difference isn’t big, barely a couple of %. But in the long perspective casino always wins meanwhile, its client always loses.

There is nothing fraud. It’s an honest deal. How fair can be a deal where one side always loses and another wins.

Help the winning side of this deal? It’s too much for me. There are better places to apply my brains without stealing money from other people.

That’s what most developers think when they get an ordinal offer to join a team developing the next online casino. Still, if the price is right some people would like to do it.

Porn&Sex Industry

Did porn harm anyone? — No.

This one is fun. Porn doesn’t have any bad measurable effect. Still, most people don’t like it. I mean, they like porn but don’t like to talk about it.

It’s part of our nature that we don’t talk about such intimate things. It’s nothing wrong with people. It’s part of our conservative culture.

Most people can’t talk freely about things like porn and sex toys. It’s also hard to say proudly — “I develop dildos”. Even that any sex toy is just a product. A good one brings pleasure to the client, even more pleasure than most other products ;)

There is nothing to be ashamed of, but who can explain it to the subconscious. That’s why there is no big desire to work in the sex field.

The developers could be more or less safe, but what about QAs. A friend of mine got an offer to work for a famous sex toys company. The position was Manual QA Engineer. He was scared to take that offer. What if something goes wrong during the testing?)

Fraud Projects

Nobody wants to be a fraud.

Stealing someone’s money is bad. This thesis should be obvious for most people. Still, some individuals do it. Professional frauds.

They need a developer to create their fraudulent product. That fails the clients’ trust and steals clients’ money.

Is there any excuse for these guys? I don’t think so.

Luckily, we can easily detect such fraud companies. Most developers can do it and ignore them. Most developers don’t want to work for fraud and break the law. That’s why there is no such thing as a good fraud product.

Each honest developer has to ignore fraud projects.

Final Thoughts

All the above fields have a high demand for qualified specialists. Companies there are ready to x2 or even x3 from the market level salary. It’s a great opportunity. If you dare to take it.
