4 Easy Ways to Get in Touch With Your Spiritual Self
Remember that you’re a spiritual being having a human experience.
I believe that many of the problems and struggles we have as human beings (and as a society as a whole) come from the fact that we don’t focus on our spiritual nature.
It’s possible to become less stressed, less fearful, happier, calmer, and more peaceful by getting in touch with your spiritual side. And doing that is relatively easy.
What if I told you that you don’t need to go to church or meditate to become more spiritual? You don’t have to do anything at all.
This is because you ARE a spiritual being already. You are both physical and spiritual — body and soul, form and formless.
Even if you aren’t religious, most of you would hopefully agree that there is a force, energy, or intelligence behind life. However, from the time we’re born, we focus almost solely on the physical nature of being human, and we “forget” that we’re also spiritual beings.
Who is the spiritual self?
Your spiritual self is your authentic self or your higher self. It’s you without an ego — the non-judgmental you. It’s who you really are deep inside. It’s that part of you that feels connected to everything else in the world. It’s the part of you that is pure unconditional love.
Sometimes you may feel as if you’ve lost touch with your spiritual self, but that isn’t possible. Your spiritual self is always there — it can never leave or go away. No matter how far removed you may feel from it, you are never apart.
Here are 4 easy ways that you can get in touch with your spiritual self:
Notice synchronicity
Do strange coincidences ever occur in your life? Things that are almost too good to be true?
Carl Jung defined synchronicity as “the simultaneous occurrence of events which appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.”
One example of synchronicity that most of us have experienced is thinking about someone. Then the phone rings, and it’s that very same person calling. Or you’re introduced to someone, or you keep running into a person again and again, and it then turns out that they’re able to help you in some way.
Some people believe that these occurrences are not a coincidence — that they are part of a bigger plan that the universe has in store for you. Or another way to look at it is that everything is energy. So when you think about or focus on something, your energy attracts those things to you.
Noticing synchronicities is a way of connecting to the spiritual side of life.
Follow your intuition
It’s easy for you to let your intellect override your gut feelings. You may often believe that your rational mind is what you should listen to as the one that knows best.
Have you ever had one of those situations where your intuition told you that someone was “bad news.” Perhaps you ignored that and got involved with that person anyway? Later, you learn that they indeed are someone you don’t want to befriend. You wish you would have listened to your gut instinct from the start.
Trust your intuition.
I often play a game where I ask myself a question then do whatever my gut tells me to do. Go for a walk, and whenever you come to a crossroad, ask your intuition — left, right, or straight ahead? Then walk whichever way you feel you should go and see what happens. You may run into someone or something that changes your life.
We are so good at ignoring our intuition that sometimes we forget what it sounds like. Is it a voice in your head? In that case, especially if it sounds like your mother or some authority figure, it’s probably not your intuition. Intuition is rarely a voice in your head. Intuition is “knowing” without any logical explanation or reasoning behind it. It’s a feeling that comes from deep inside you (your gut) and not from your thinking or brain.
Surrender to a greater power
If you’re like me, you might be trying to control too much in your life.
Knowing that you’re in control and that the choices you make in life will affect the outcome, is a good thing. It leads to mental health, happiness, and resilience. When you feel that the locus of control is outside of yourself, this can cause anxiety, stress, and learned helplessness.
But what CAN you control? You certainly can’t control everything. Have you ever tried so hard to achieve something and get your desired outcome, but you failed time and time again? Then when you finally surrendered and gave up — realized that it wasn’t meant to be — everything fell into place?
I’m reminds of the Serenity Prayer, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; wisdom to know the difference.” — Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr
The concept of surrendering is not to become a victim and adept learned helplessness. It’s realizing that there is a force, energy, or intelligence behind life that knows more and has a much greater plan for you and your life than you do.
Know you are enough
We spend so much time chasing after things to make us whole and make us better. Market data estimates that the self-improvement industry is worth over $13 billion in the US alone.
Why does anyone ever think, for one moment, that they’re not good enough? It’s because they’re ignoring the spiritual side of life.
Your spiritual self is perfect. Your spiritual self is actually a little piece of God, Allah, Buddha, Krishna, or whatever deity you might believe in. If you’re an atheist, your spiritual self is the energy, force, or intelligence behind life. It’s what beats your heart and heals your wounds when you cut yourself.
Your spiritual self is like a drop of water, and all life forms the ocean. You are both the drop and the ocean. You are whole — you are perfect — you are enough.
