4 Easy Steps to Create a Morning Routine That Will Change Your Life
An effective morning routine allowed me to quit my 9–5.
If you get your morning routine right, you can achieve anything you want.
But how often do you wake up feeling sluggish, snoozing your alarm, and lacking clarity and direction about where you’re headed?
So many people are simultaneously wired but tired, lacking the discipline and direction to make progress on the most important things in their life. They start their day already experiencing resistance and living out of alignment with their highest self and their goals.
Here are 4 simple steps you can use to create a routine that will change your life in a matter of months.
The Importance of a Morning Routine
You might be thinking that you don’t have time for a morning routine. You’ve got kids, a long commute, and a busy job. The thing is, you don’t need to spend an hour on your morning routine.
In fact, you hardly have to spend any extra time on it at all.
You simply have to tweak how you approach your morning and identify the intentions behind each of your morning practices.
When you front-load the day with lever-moving habits, you’re guaranteed to progress quickly.
It’s impossible to become stagnant because you’re automating success.
This can be in business, family, health — whatever you want to succeed at.
The key is identifying those habits.
My morning routine allowed me to leave my 9–5 in just 9 months and work completely for myself. You can read more about this routine here:
Let’s look at how you can create an impactful morning routine with only a few extra minutes each morning.
What You Can Do
1. Know what you’re working towards
Before you can create a high-impact morning routine, you need to know what you’re optimizing for.
What matters most to you?
What are you working towards right now?
What areas of your life need more attention?
Think about all aspects of your life — physical health, mental health, spiritual health, family, work, leisure, and purpose.
2. Identify key lever-moving practices
Once you know what you want to improve, you need to figure out exactly what you need to do every day to get to where you want to be.
You might think you can’t change your life in a morning, but if you’re intentional, have clear goals, and remove distractions, you can.
3. A good morning routine starts the night before
If you want to get your morning routine right, you need to spend a few minutes in the evening getting yourself organized.
- Plan your morning and your day
- Get everything ready (clothes, coffee, meditations, podcasts)
- Brain dump all to-dos and thoughts so they don’t keep you up
You might think waking up a bit earlier will be hard and uncomfortable — but if you get your evening routine and bedtime right, plus if you have a huge purpose/project to work on, you’ll never struggle to get out of bed again.
4. Set your constant wake time and start and finish times for each of the practices
You must get up at the same time each day. The main impact of this is on your circadian rhythm — which will improve your sleep quality and your health in general.
But the secondary benefit of this is that you can plan and stick to your routine every morning.
So set your wake time, and plan out each of your morning practices with a clear start and end time. This way, you just run through the plan each day and can still make it to work on time.
