4 Characteristics That Make A Writing Course Worth Attending
It’ s all about you
Can you keep up with your daily tasks and your life plans, while adding some interesting activity? I can’t. In fact, I had to write less on Medium since I was attending the last few lessons of a writing course, and had to hand in my final work. I decided I had to prioritize something.
I am sure you all have attended writing courses, but you have been often disappointed. You learn the techniques, you practice writing a few pages, but after the course you feel you are still in the same situation, despite paying for it.
This time I decided to follow my instincts and go for it. The course I attended was organized by a famous and very expensive school in Italy. I can’t afford it but luckily there was a special offer on Black Friday, so I took it.
The seminar was particularly appealing because I love the teacher: she is a famous writer that I follow on social media. I find her intelligent and funny, I like the way she writes, and I like her as a person. Yet I haven’t read all her books. The course was great, and I enjoyed it. It was the first time I could give shape to one of my projects.
Why was this course different form the other ones I have attended? What are the characteristics that make a course worth paying for?
1. The teacher took great care of our work. She read and commented on our essays.
2. She gave us examples by reading pages of famous books we all knew about. For every subject, for dialogues, and character description there was an example.
3. She worked hard, harder than the students.
4. Her course touched many subjects, but it had a main plot, with a beginning and an end. It was a complete story.
It was an online course, but we met face to face for the last lesson. I must admit it was a long journey for me because I had to travel by train to another city, there were delays and I rushed to the school. The other students were from different cities and had different experiences and ages, but we shared our comments very openly and honestly.
For all these reasons, I decided that I will also attend the second level of the course. This famous writer gave value to our efforts and to our dreams. She encouraged us to improve our writing style. She showed us that working hard takes time, and one day we will be able to realize our plans.
Most of all, she believed in us.
