35 Life Lessons For My 12 and 13 Year Old Daughters
Lessons I wish I’d known when I was young

I have two daughters, Inty who’s thirteen and Luna who’s twelve. They were born in Scotland to an Argentinian Mum and a Scottish Dad (me). We all now live in Australia.
Inty and Luna (and their mum) are everything to me.
Here are 35 life lessons that I wish I’d known when I was their age.
Have a strong handshake
A weak handshake is so very disappointing.
Avoid following the crowd
I followed the group to a certain extent. It doesn’t work. Real friends don’t need to be followed. Do your own thing and settle with the friends you find.
Get rid of friends who are no good
Not always easy when you’re young. Don’t waste your time with kids who cause you more harm than good. If kids have a habit of making you feel sad, best to step away and not spend time with them.
Be nice to your sister
Friends will come and go, but the family will be there for the long term. My brothers are my top two go to people, and they always will be.
Finish school
For the majority of people, it makes sense to finish school. Most other things can wait until you finish school.
Uni may or may not make sense
Do it for the right reasons. Only go if you’re passionate about what you’re studying.
Travel and experience the world in your 20’s
Don’t panic in your twenties about career or money. Earn enough to travel and see the world. No better experience than seeing what else is out there. This will shape the future you for the better.
Don’t get a serious job too soon
See the world, and you’ll learn about yourself and your surroundings. Seeing the world makes your life interesting. There will always be time to get to your career.
Celebrate your differences
This is what makes you who you are.
If you get tattoos, wait until you’re 30
You’ll be wiser after your twenties.
Exercise
Keep the body moving. Make this a habit for as long as is possible. You’ll live longer and feel better for it.
Don’t take life too seriously
I probably worried too much when I was young. My mother would argue I didn’t worry enough I’m sure. Life is just once so give it a good nudge and have some fun.
Read lots of books
You both read, and I see how it’s helped you. Keep reading; it’ll change your world.
Dress with style
You don’t need to show everything to turn heads.
Write
When you get up in the morning, write down what’s in your head. Whatever it is get it out. This practice will change your life.
Daily gratitude
Write down three things your grateful for every day. Could be the wind on your face or whatever. They say you can’t be grateful and angry at the same time.
Make your bed
Get that bed made when you get up. Making your bed first thing leads on to a good solid start for the day. It seems weird but believe me; this small thing will help you start your day on the right track.
Don’t wear too much makeup
Your real face needs to be seen. Compliment it with some eyeliner or whatever works. Just don’t be that person covered in makeup.
Be authentic
This isn’t always easy, but it’s the only way to be. Be honest with yourself and others, and you’ll do well.
Speak up if you don’t agree with something
If you believe in someone or something, don’t be afraid to speak up.
Say please and thank you
Manners are a winner, and so important.
Close your mouth when you eat
We don’t need to see your food being ground down.
Don’t accept drinks from strangers
You don’t know what’s in that drink.
Be smart what photos you put online or send to a friend
Never send a picture to anyone else’s phone that you wouldn’t want to show your granny.
Stand up when an adult enters the room, look them in the eye and say hello
This is grown up manners and is so valuable.
Learn some self-defence
This may come in handy if someone tries to take advantage of you.
Making stretching a habit
Stretching will keep you young.
Use an electric toothbrush and floss
This is a brilliant investment. It’ll save you big bucks on dental work later on life.
Don’t spend too many hours of your life wearing high heels,
Your feet will be sad and ugly when you’re older if you do this.
Don’t worry too much if you don’t know what to do with your life
It’ll come. You need to be patient with this one.
