34 Things That Get Better As You Age
Your world isn’t diminishing; it’s evolving
When we’re young, we look forward to our birthdays. We want an individual candle to represent each year.
However, as the years pass us by, we begin to shy away from being excited about being a year older.
You fear that your best years are behind you because you associate less of everything with getting older.
Less good health, mobility, less money, less memory, less time left on earth to complete your goals and fulfill your dreams.
In reality, there is still so much to look forward to and appreciate. Aging is inevitable, and it’s your job to create a life that allows you to live yours to the fullest.
Don’t allow yourself to fall into the trap of thinking your life diminishes with time.
I’ve compiled a list of 32 things that get better as you age.
Let’s jump in.
1. Wine
The older the bottle, the bolder the taste. As the wine ages, you’re then able to get the young, bold notions of fresh fruit that become gradually more subdued and reminiscent of dried fruit. All of the other flavors that were once hidden by bold primary notes come to the fore, like herbal notes, honey, mushroom, stone, and earth.
2. Love
Love becomes more fundamental. It’s about the connection you form with the person; you become more aware of how they make you laugh and how there’s a certain lovely crinkle in the corner of their eyes when they smile.
Love becomes less about you and more about them. You go back to the basics of real intimacy. You focus on soul fulfillment rather than just surface-level satisfaction.
3. Intellectual conversation
You grow, you read, you learn. You discuss controversial topics with friends and gain insight into other perspectives.
You learn empathy and how to express yourself and your thoughts coherently.
4. Sex
This doesn’t mean that sex won’t be good until you’re a certain age. However, as you do age, you become more confident. This means you know what makes you feel good, and you’re less concerned with how things ‘should’ be.
Everybody experiences sex differently, I have always felt like I couldn’t be the person I wanted to be in any aspect of my life — especially sex life — until I started making a good living. It’s about reaching a point in your life — whether that’s in your career, family, or whatever it is you have stress about — where you feel you’ve accomplished something. Because pleasure all comes down to being relaxed and feeling equal with whoever you’re having sex with, I think that level of serenity in life is what allows for better sex.
Once you’re freed of those anxieties, you’re able to experience sex on a much deeper and more satisfying level.
5. Books
Ever read a novel that was written 100+ years ago? I urge you to do so if you haven’t. The Count of Monte Cristo is my all-time favorite.
6. Waffles on Saturday morning
There’s nothing more blissful than waking up on a Saturday morning to the smell of waffles. You begin to enjoy the little things as time passes. The taste of maple syrup on a blueberry waffle, sipping on French roast from your favorite mug that you bought on your trip to Paris when you were 23.
7. Date nights
Real conversation, 1-on-1 action, a way to escape your busy life.
8. Sunsets
You used to look at the sky and call it pretty. Now you look at it for the masterpiece that it is. Throughout your entire life, it only gets better.
9. Alone time
You realize that bad company is worst than no company at all. Being alone allows you to recenter yourself. If you can’t learn to be happy alone, you’ll never be happy with anybody else.
“A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit, and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy?” — Albert Einstein
10. Self-care
Age gracefully.
There’s a sense of pride and self-worth that comes along with caring for and about yourself. Your body is a temple — your only real home. And, it’s the only one you’re ever going to get, so you should care for it and about it.
How it feels. How it looks. How it performs. And, more importantly, how long it lasts.
11. Travel
You’ve seen many lovely things when you were young, but as you get older and wiser, you see things through a new lens.
12. Communicating
Your communication skills — if worked on — get better. You gain a better understanding of what you truly want. You gain clarity over your thoughts and words.
13. Your taste in music
While your teenage years were defined by “intense” music, you never got a real feel of authentic music.
14. Routines
When you’re young, everything is about immediate gratification. Your routine is built around what you can accomplish in a day, or a week. As you get older, your routine changes, and what used to matter doesn’t.
15. Habits
Your daily life looks different; you focus more on what will make you feel good and suit your needs better. You’re not in a constant state of, “go go go.”
16. Walks on the beach
There’s a magical peace in walks on the beach as you grow older, you become more appreciative of your surroundings. You notice the way the sun glistens on the water just a bit more; you envelop yourself in the sound of the waves, you relax at the feel of the water touching your toes.
17. Old movies
Old movies are the epitome of happiness. Classic movies allow you to walk away with knowledge about real events. They have brilliant characters, inspiring stories, and values that withstand the test of time.
18. Patience
As you get older, you become more aware of the clutter that fills your mind. You become more patient with life and its problems, understanding that everything negative is only temporary.
19. Your beauty
You’re beautiful when you’re young, but just as a bottle of wine or whiskey tastes better with age, you become more divine.
Every curve, dip, blemish, and line on your body is a representation of the life you have lived and still have to live.
20. Self-awareness
You learn about yourself as time passes. You learn what you like and what you don’t like. You learn about what matters to you and what can get lost in the wind, you learn about why you do things the way you do them.
When put into practice, self-awareness makes you your own best friend.
21. Sense of humor
You become airier. You stop taking everything at face value.
22. Your taste in partners
Your age often dictates your taste in characteristics and what you look for in a partner.
When you’re young, looks dominate the top of the list. Perhaps you’ll throw in a good sense of humor or the ability to take you out to nice dinners.
However, as you grow older, specific attributes will become less important, you will replace them with new things, and you will look for more depth within your partner.
23. Your taste in food
In the words of the incredible Anthony Bourdain:
“As a general statement, our palates are changing. We’ve seen a few really big moments just in the last 30, 40 years. The moment Americans decided that raw fish was desirable. Huge! Nothing could be more repulsive to the traditional American table than raw fish. And yet suddenly, very quickly, we all wanted it. It doesn’t really matter why — whether it was because we saw Sarah Jessica Parker eating it on TV or it was just brightly colored, or we were drunk. Whatever. Suddenly now we like it.”
24. The way you feel after making big decisions
Imagine the satisfaction you’ll feel after purchasing your first home. Or your new vacation home.
25. Putting your feet up after a long day
Try it. After waking up, going for a run, getting ready for work, working 7–8 hours, coming home and making dinner, there’s no better feeling than settling down on the couch after a satisfying day.
26. Someone buying you dinner
Your parents paying the tab at restaurants was a constant thing — you’d order whatever you want, and the bill would come, and you didn’t need to pay a single thought to it.
Now, you’re covering the bill. Whether or not you do it willingly, it’s always nice when someone else says: “I’ve got this one.”
27. Self-confidence
Self-confidence varies from person to person, but it does tend to grow with age. You start to look at yourself in a new light as you mature over the years. You’ve gained more self-awareness.
28. Cheese
Ever have a meat and cheese board? It’s a delicacy. Cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano, gouda, manchego, and gruyere just keep getting better and better as they age. Try to look for some delicious aged cheese the next time you’re in your store’s fancy cheese area.
29. Art
It doesn’t matter if you have a piece of art that gains in monetary value or sentimental value — art simply gets better with age.
Van Gogh’s paintings went up to a worth of over $100 million a hundred years after he died.
A drawing your child, a friend, a lover made for you has even more sentimental value over time.
30. Your body image
It won’t be about the number on the scale, or whether or not you could fit into a particular size jeans, it’ll be about how you and how your body feels.
31. Technology
Technology is forever evolving. How we communicate has changed immensely, and today, many of our inventions are focused on creating faster ways of communicating with each other. In the process, we’re creating more data than humans can comprehend.
32. Sleep
I used to hate sleeping; now, it’s one of my favorite activities. Sleep is the best way for your body to regenerate itself and make you feel your absolute best.
33. Career
Think about where you started and where you are. Think about every job you’ve ever had and how you’ve evolved from it.
Consider your takeaways, the lessons learned, and the opportunities presented.
34. People’s opinions don’t matter as much
My mom told me this; I asked her: “What’s better at 40 than at 20?”
She responded with:
“By forty, I finally realized that no matter what I did and said, there would always be those who would be outraged, disagree with me, or be dissatisfied. So, don’t be afraid to be yourself. And stop worrying so dang much about what others think of you.”
