31 Views and I’m Going Places
My start may be slow, but it’s steady.
With a self-published book on Amazon, some loyal Medium followers, and a few loyal fans who follow me on Facebook. It’s a good feeling to get a few claps and likes here or there. I’d like to share my journey, that way if you’re a freelance writer with few fans, you know you’re not alone.
Self-promoting is probably the hardest part to get a good grasp on. Some stories get passed by and some stories you hit the mark at the right time. Facebook is my main Author platform and it depends on the mood of my audience. If I share at the right time or the right person shares my link I tend to go big for a while.
No… I am not a big wig with 10,000 viewers, but I did make a little over a dollar for the first time on Medium, and it felt pretty good.
Unlike most, I try not to get too controversial, which is hard to do these days. So I thought I would share a few tips and tricks I learned along the way. Yes, there are hundreds of other posts with tips on how to get started, but guess what? Most of them are people looking back from 10,000 likes. It’s hard to remember the feeling of your first dollar hundreds of dollars later.
REREAD YOUR WORK, OUTLOUD IF POSSIBLE. Flow and making sure your point is clear is more important than one would think. When you reread to yourself you can easily catch phrases that are overused or a description that doesn’t quite describe what you want it to. As a beginner, I realized you almost always lose a reader if they have to stop and reread something. Readers want it clear, without too much filler, and for it to flow easily.
DON’T JUST PROMOTE YOUR WORK, PROMOTE YOURSELF. You can share your article all day long and you will catch a few readers here and there that relate to that specific article, but if you gain followers that relate to you, or like your work, you gain loyal readers. I have about 20 people that without a doubt, no matter what I write, will read my work. It doesn’t seem like much, but those people will share, clap, like, and sometimes respond to each article.
FOLLOW YOUR FOLLOWERS AND YOUR FANS. Whether its fellow writers, readers, or even just people that have viewed or clapped for your work. Not only will knowing their interest help you to write more articles that interest them, but it will help you to know what kind of audience you are hitting. For example; if you share your article with 3 different Facebook Pages, and most of your likes came from one page, you know either to tone into that group of people or to push your articles in different areas.
BE A GOOD FAN AND FOLLOWER. Seems silly, but if you follow or like someone spend some time reading, liking, and responding. It helps other writers, but it also helps you. Especially as we start out, instead of acting like its a contest we should ban together, support each other. If you respond to an article or clap for other people, it doesn’t affect your article negatively one bit, but it may help. We all know the hardest part is putting yourself out there and making your name popular. By supporting each other you are also putting your name in other places and taking the chance it might catch someone’s eye and they will click on your profile.
It’s not advice from a big wig by any means, but I figured a lot of us are floating in the same boat, and sharing my experience may help.
If you have any advice or anything to add I would love to hear it!
