300 Words 01/14/2024 | 12 Days 17 Stories 8674 Words

A Recap of My Time on Medium So-Far.

Photo by Markus Winkler on Unsplash

On January 2nd I started a challenge to publish at least 300 words on Medium every day in 2024 including weekends and holidays. My original goal was to only write 300 words every day. By adding “publish on Medium” to the goal, I increased the challenge and the intensity.

This last step has made all the difference. If I were to only “write” 300 words in a journal or somewhere else, I would be the only person who would know if I didn’t. It would make it that much easier to quit or skip a day. Instead I’ve chosen to publish on Medium. Both for the accountability and to get something tangible out of the process.

You may be asking yourself: Why would I do this to myself? What is the point?

Why would I do this to myself?

You see those are two great questions. First off, I’m doing this for myself not to myself. I have a lot of thoughts and ideas, but they are worthless stuck inside my head. I’d much rather get them out and share them with the world than let them spoil in my own mind.

By sharing these thoughts I get to experience an outside perspective. In fact I get to experience your perspective through your highlights and your comments. (I cherish every single one of them.) I also get real time feedback on what interests other people.

What’s the point?

The point is to improve my writing, explore my curiosities, and develop systems that will earn a livable income. Writing on Medium is one step in that process. Forcing myself to write at least 300 words per story is how I will accomplish this. 300 words is short enough that I can process it daily, but long enough that I can get into a nice flow state while writing. It is also generic enough that I’m not limited by a specific topic, but can explore new topics as my interest is piqued.

What are my results?

So far over the past 12 days I have written 17 stories totaling to 8,764 words. That averages out to 510 words per article. I have had 79 people read my stories so far. Thank you for everyone who has read so far. I am picking up momentum and can’t wait to see where I’ll be three months from now.

Until next time.

Thank you,

Jeff
