30 Writing Prompts for January
Starting Off the New Year on the Right Footing
Are you ready for some more writing prompts? Here are my writing prompts for January. I wanted to start the new year off on the right footing. I wrote an article recently about my word for 2024, which is heaven. You can read more about that in my article:
1. What is your word for 2024?
2. Do you have any goals for 2024?
3. Write a short story with this as your first sentence: As the first snowfall blankets the town, a mysterious figure appears at your doorstep.
4. I’m sure you have some writing goals for the new year. Write a letter to your future self, reflecting on those goals you hope to achieve in the coming year.
5. I don’t believe in time travel, but I thought it might be fun to explore the concept of time travel and its consequences in a short story.
6. Have some fun and describe a winter scene from the perspective of a character who has never seen snow before.
7. Put your creative writing hat on. Write a dialogue between two characters who find themselves trapped in a time loop.
8. I love listening to the sound of rain. Create a poem inspired by the sound of rain tapping against your window.
9. Thinking about the new year usually gets us thinking about changes we want to make in our lives. Explore the theme of new beginnings in a story set on New Year’s Eve.
10. Balance your creative and analytical sides and write a narrative from the point of view of an inanimate object witnessing a significant moment.
11. If I could have any superpower, I’d love to have invisibility. You can read more about that in my article listed below. Get creative and create a character who possesses a unique and unexpected superpower.
12. I’m not a fan of artificial intelligence. You know, because the machines will eventually take over!! Ok, that’s probably not going to happen, but you can have some fun and describe a futuristic society where emotions are controlled by technology.
13. Explore the concept of parallel universes in a short story.
14. Secrets can have far-reaching consequences that you might not ever realize at the time. Write a letter of apology from a character who has just discovered a life-changing secret.
15. Have you ever had an imaginary childhood friend? Write a story based on the idea of a forgotten childhood imaginary friend returning years later.
16. Write a descriptive piece about a hidden, enchanted forest where time behaves differently.
17. Have you ever had a really descriptive dream that stayed with you for a while? Imagine if one of your dreams became a reality. Write a short story about that.
18. If you love getting creative, you can have fun with this prompt. Write a story set in a post-apocalyptic world where the last library on Earth holds the key to survival.
19. Change is a part of life. You can’t get away from change happening in your life. You need to learn to accept it and hopefully embrace it. Write a poem about the beauty and challenges of embracing change.
20. Write a dialogue between two characters who accidentally switch bodies.
21. Create a story set in a society where memories can be bought and sold.
22. Have you ever had to overcome big obstacles? Explore the theme of resilience in a short story (or personal essay) about overcoming adversity.
23. When you think about Fall, you likely think about the beautiful colors of the changing leaves. When you think about winter, things are stark with trees without leaves and snowy weather. Write a poem inspired by the colors and sensations of a winter sunrise.
24. Craft a short story where characters must solve a series of riddles to save their town.
25. Write a letter from your current self to your past self, giving advice and reflections on your journey.
26. Have you learned any lessons in 2023 that will positively and productively impact your life in 2024?
27. Are there any Bible verses that you are focusing on as you enter into the new year?
28. Were there any Bible verses in 2023 that really helped you overcome difficulties you experienced?
