30 Writing Prompts for December 2023

Celebrating the Real Reason for the Season

Jesus is the reason for the season!

I started doing writing prompts in October and November this year. I’ve received great responses and engagement from readers and writers. I am enjoying writing these prompts. Here are my 30 writing prompts for December.

1. What does Christmas mean to you? Why is it so special?

2. Do you have any special childhood memories from Christmas time?

3. What are some traditions you and your family celebrate this time of year? Do you have favorite holiday traditions from your childhood?

4. Did you learn any important lessons this year? What did you learn and why was it important to you?

5. Have you ever used a personal shopper to help you shop for presents for those on your Christmas list? Was that experience good or bad?

6. Have you ever volunteered in your community to give back during the holiday season? What did you learn from that experience?

7. Do you have any favorite foods that you like to eat during the holiday season? Do you prefer salty, sweet, or spiced treats?

8. Write a short story about Christmas and why it’s such a special time of year.

9. Do you put up a Christmas tree? Is it real or artificial? Do you have themed decorations or a mix of different ornaments? When do you put up your tree — early in the month or closer to Christmas day? We set up our tree the day after Thanksgiving.

10. Do you like to watch Christmas movies? Do you have any favorites? Are there any holiday movies that you love watching each Christmas season? I love watching Christmas movies.

11. Do you like hot chocolate? Do you like to add anything to your hot chocolate like marshmallows or cinnamon etc.?

12. What is the best gift you ever received for Christmas? What is the best gift you ever gave someone?

13. Have you ever attended a Christmas play, musical, or other special holiday entertainment event that was truly memorable for you?

14. Have you ever gone caroling? Do you have any favorite Christmas carols?

15. Do you have any favorite holiday recipes that you can share?

16. Do you like Christmas cookies? What are your favorite kinds?

17. Do you like decorating for Christmas? What are some of your favorite decorations? When do you put up your decorations? Do you hang lights outside on your house?

18. Write a poem about Christmas.

19. Do you have any favorite holiday traditions that you do every December with your friends?

20. Get creative. Write a story about five strangers who get stranded somewhere together on Christmas Eve while they are traveling to get home to family on Christmas Day.

21. What are your top 5 favorite holiday songs?

22. The best part of this season is love and how Christmas brings people together. Write a list of 5 ways that you can be kind to others this month.

23. What are 5 things you like about Christmas and 5 things you don’t like about it?

24. Research other cultures and learn something new. Expand your perspective. Write about how Christmas is celebrated around the world, and/or how other holidays like Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are celebrated.

25. Do you send out cards during the holiday season? Do you prefer buying cards, doing family photo cards, or making your own cards?

26. Pretend you work at Santa’s Workshop, and you need to hire more elves. What type of help wanted ad would you write for the North Pole Gazette?

27. Write a letter to a family member that you haven’t seen for a long time. Wish them a Merry Christmas and share what you and your family are doing for the holidays.

28. Pretend Santa’s Village at the North Pole is real. Write about what you would see and experience if you visited there.

29. Write a poem about the birth of Jesus.

30. What would make this holiday season special for you? Is there anything you are praying for that you hope God will answer this month?
