30 New Habits in 30 Days

Every night I go to bed thinking tomorrow I will do this new healthy thing I know will be good for me. Every morning I wake up and decide to start the healthy habit tomorrow because while it seemed like a great idea yesterday, today is not the right day to begin.
Tomorrows become todays and the promises of yesterdays fade with the reality of daylight and the immediacy of the now.
The only way to change a downward slide is to start inching upward.
Step one is deciding.
Here is my plan. April has 30 days, the perfect amount of time for a habit formation experiment. Each day in April I will add a new habit. I commit to keeping the habit for 30 days. So the totality of the experiment will last for 60 days as whatever habit I start on April 30 will last until May 30.
As I add in new habits I will continue to do the habits I’ve already started. My theory is positive momentum builds positive momentum. While adding new habits daily is a tad extreme, I will be fully immersed in new habit mode. Each habit I add will remind me that I am in a change my life through small steps scenario.
I’ve had past success with a buckle down and go all-in approach. I was pregnant and or nursing for six years straight on the theory that once in baby mode stay in baby mode. Those were six wild years but I loved having my three close in age once I finally managed to catch up on my sleep.
Here are the rules I’m setting for myself
- Add a new habit each day for 30 days.
- Continue each habit while adding the new ones.
- The habits can be as small as I like as long as they are positive in some way.
- At the end of 30 days for each habit, evaluate and decide if I want to keep it up.
- Track progress in a spreadsheet.
- Celebrate the heck out of the fact that I’m moving in a positive direction.
I don’t have my habits all planned out. I have a few vague ideas and I’m sure more will arise as I get into the month. I’m pretty sure planks, push-ups, walking, veggie consumption, writing, and giving compliments will be involved.
My first habit will be posting every day about my new habit. This is why I created this publication to house my habit experiment. Follow if you want to watch my journey unfold in real-time.
Do you want to join me?
Facing a challenge with a buddy is always easier than going it alone. If this idea of a month full of new habits interests you why not join in.
You don’t need to follow my rules. Create your own. Post daily with your new habits or provide a weekly summary or post only at the beginning and end of your journey. Whatever works for you.
I’ve circled the sun enough times to know that there is no one-size-suits-all approach to living your best life. This is likely one of many reasons I haven’t risen to stratospheric heights of self-help stardom.
What I do know is the journey to change starts with the first step. If you would like to join me in 30 days of 30 new habits just comment here with “add me as a writer”.
Do you have any habit suggestions for me? I’d love to hear them.
Have you ever done something similar? I’d love to hear how it worked out for you.
