Lesson #1: Family

You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.

Desmond Tutu

Dear Son,

I wanted to start this series with family.

It might not be the most important lesson that you take from these letters, but it’s the one thing that will be with you from your first breath until your last.

The family will help you get through the tough times in life.

When adversity hits, and believe me it will. Your family will be there for you to lean on.

There will be times when your family embarrasses you. And there will also be times when you have disagreements and arguments with them.

The thing about family is you don’t get to pick them. You also don’t get to leave them.

No matter what conflicts arise within the family, we always resolve them.

Because it’s worth it.

To me, our family means everything. It’s our history, our culture, and our future.

As I continue to build a lasting legacy for our family, I want you to remember where you came from and what our family represents.

When you have a family of your own, I hope you will continue the legacy and remember these values I have passed down to you.

Here is a quote from one of the greatest movies of all time, The Godfather. (We’ll have time to talk about the movie later)

“A man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man.”

— The Godfather

Just remember that I’ll be here for you, as will the rest of the family.

Love you, Son,

Dad
