30 in 30 Challenge

When you treat writing as a career, it becomes one. I wrote on May 3rd that I wanted to become a more disciplined writer and I detailed how I was going to do it.

The goal was to treat writing on Medium like a job. I would approach it like I do endurance sports. I reasoned that I worked very hard to finish a half marathon and I worked very hard to become a triathlete. Why wasn’t I working as hard for writing, something that I actually have a little ability, unlike endurance sports?

I was not ready to take on the Illumination challenge of 30 publications in 30 days. But I was ready to work. My biggest success was due to my new habit of coming up with ten ideas for articles every morning. I did not stick to that rule each morning. But I developed the habit of writing down ideas as soon as I thought of them. The ultimate result was 28 articles in 30 days. Not too shabby.I wasn’t even trying for 30 in 30! I became a writer for five publications and added over 150 followers.

On the topic of money. I did not replace my reporter income with Medium income. I was laid off from my reporter job and unsure if the paper would survive. Three weeks ago, I was called back. I’m thrilled. But I decided that the newspaper industry is struggling to survive. I should keep the same Medium goal.

Part of the process is working toward a goal, even a simple goal on Medium. My reporter income is not a livable income. I realized that I have some notions about people who only focus on making money. I see it as a slightly shameful endeavor. People out there hustling for the money only care about the money. Not genuine success. Success is not money and money is not success. But I learned it’s okay to want both and create a playbook to obtain it for yourself. My goal is not even that big. Replace my reporter income. My reporter income from a small town newspaper is next to nothing. I do it because I love the work. I think my goal is attainable on Medium. Though I’ve read plenty of articles explaining that it’s absurd. There is no shame in working hard for a paycheck goal.

The month of June begins my 30 articles in 30 days challenge as an experiment in growth. I did write 30 in 30 last month. But published 28. There were a couple really bad efforts. I wonder what type of growth I will see, how many new publications I will add and how many followers will be reading my work.

This effort in May and June is a test of the compound effect, as explained in the book The Compound Effect, by Darren Hardy. The idea that small actions each day will lead you to your goals. I will continue to work each day on that 30 in 30 challenge. I want to keep working and, no matter how long it takes, hit that, income goal for Medium.
