Summary

The author, a software engineer, shares their experience of using blue-filter glasses for 30 days to reduce eye strain and improve sleep.

Abstract

The author, a software engineer who spends long hours in front of a screen, discusses their struggle with eye strain and the steps they took to address it. They tried decreasing screen time, healing their vision, and adding regular breaks, but found limited success. The author then discovered blue-filter glasses, which they used for 30 days and found to be effective in reducing eye strain and improving sleep. They share their experience with the glasses, including the initial discomfort and eventual adaptation, and encourage readers to share their own eye-protection strategies.

30 Days of Work with Blue-Filter Glasses

Is there any sense?

I am a software engineer. I spend 8 hours per day in front of a screen working on my primary job. Then I spend 2–3 hours more working on my pet project. Then I give myself a rest watching YouTube or Netflix.

But there is an issue. My eyes get tired a lot. A whole day in front of screens doesn’t help them to relax. This lifestyle was killing them.

But the feeling is not that bad. My vision became to get worse…

It was too serious to ignore it further. I had to take action.

So what could I do?

Decrease amount of time in front of the screen.

Good one, but hard to implement. I have to work, so can’t go for less than 8 hours. Also, I need to have some additional life online. It sums up in almost the same amount of time.

Heal my vision

I tried. Some time ago I spend 6 months healing my eyes, visiting doctors, fighting for my vision. Restricted computer time and followed doctor’s recommendation. Well… it didn’t work…

Add regular breaks

This one is the best thing I did for my vision so far. There is an application that controls your computer time and locks the screen every 20 minutes. It forced me to take a break and give some rest to my eyes.

The application I use is called WorkRave. Thanx to its developers!

A good one, it helped me to solve the problem. Not completely, but it got better. My eyes weren’t so tired in the evening. I didn’t feel sand inside of them anymore in the evenings.

Reduce blue light

Blue light is bad for the eyes. It is part of the overall light spectrum: from red to blue. Due to its physical parameters, blue light passes straight through to the back of the retina. It could lead to permanent vision changes.

I won’t dive into detailed physics explanations. If you are interested in the nature of the blue light. You can read this article.

How to do it?

I have to fight the blue light. Luckily there is a way to do it. Special glasses with blue filters. You wear them to protect your eyes during work.

I bought myself a pair. It wasn’t too cheap or too expensive. You can find a couple or two in the nearest optics store.

Previously, I have never worn glasses so the first days were uncomfortable, but nothing critical. They didn’t distract me from work. At some point, I just forget that I wear glasses.

I thought it would be worse.

What are the results after 30 days?

Glasses with blue filters work. Details below.

1st day

The first day I used them I didn’t like the idea and feeling. The light spectrum became a little bit more yellow. I didn’t like that either.

The worst thing was that I didn’t feel the relief. My eyes were still burning after the working hours. It didn’t help me on the first day.

But I didn’t give up that fast. I decided to give it a try at least for a week.

2nd and the following days

On the second day, I began to feel less tension in the eyes during the day. Further, this result only was getting better and better.

I can explain the lack of results on the day-1 with the adaptation period. On the first day, my eyes were getting used to the new lens.

Current routine

Now after 30 days of using blue filter glasses I like them.

Glasses made my working hours easier. Also, reducing the amount of blue light improves sleep. Probably, it’s because of less tension during the day.

All the above is my personal experience. It may differ from yours. I would like to know what life hacks do you use to protect your eyes working in front of the screen. Please share your thoughts in the comments.
