Get noticed even if you don’t have any corporate experience

It is difficult to find a job right now during this pandemic era.

What we are all after is survival during these times of economic turmoil caused by this main disruptor — COVID 19.

Companies around the globe are hurting. Sales numbers of businesses are now decreasing; Dues from customers are no longer collectible due to bankruptcy and the competition right now is to just merely aim for sustainability.

As a result of this downturn, many companies have ceased operations while some have displaced people.

This would mean an increased unemployment rate due to the oversupply of people looking for jobs.

So what happens now if you are a fresh graduate competing for a job against those experienced ones?

How can you get noticed and differentiate yourself amongst the crowd?

Your resume serves as your first gateway to the company.

Given that attention span is short nowadays, you must build a captivating resume that makes them want to interview you right away.

1. Be clear on how you want to promote yourself

Before you even attempt to write that resume, you need to be clear on how you want to brand yourself.

To brand yourself — you need to be aware of who you are and what you are made of.

It is really hard to promote something that you are unsure about.

So, if you are puzzled on how to determine what you are capable of doing, you can start by listing down the skills that you’ve gained from a recent project or volunteer group.

Awards or certifications you’ve received in the past are a reflection of competencies you already have.

Try to go over the books you’ve read, videos you’ve watched, and advocacies you’ve supported with all your heart.

If you haven’t determined anything yet, try to recall moments in your life that you have enjoyed doing such as interacting with people, making a sales pitch, exploring newly launched apps in the market, or being engrossed with saving and growing money.

Everyone has a talent and we just need to soul-search to determine what we have.

2. Give more substance to your work experience

Other than inserting your on-the-job training experience — you can beef up the experience section of your resume even if you don’t have any corporate experience at the moment.

  • Once you have determined the talents you have, find a company where you can offer free services
  • Explore side hustles that you can do even on an occasional basis
  • Find a non-profit organisation that speaks about your interest that could hone your skills and serve the public

I am proposing these steps since rendering these talents demonstrates your significance to a business.

On the other hand, performing side hustles show your skills in selling that can benefit any organisation on this planet.

These are tangible proofs that display your worth and benefit.

3. Insert links that show evidence to your claim

The importance of having your website or LinkedIn profile is that it can further establish your credibility by pointing the reader of your resume to your content that supports what you represent.

For instance, to prove my leadership ability, I would be able to insert links in my resume that would lead readers to my online articles or posts about my personal experience and lessons that I’ve learned in managing people or a difficult project.

It is difficult to assess one person by just merely looking at his resume so it is vital to have another platform to show more pieces of evidence to our claim.
