3 Tips to Manage Stress in Your Life

Help for the holiday season — and beyond…

Yan Krukau

Do you feel like stress is a constant companion in your life? It can feel like we have little to no control over what is happening in our lives. Like it’s some external force out there lurking.

The combination of relationships, work, what’s happening in the world — along with those daily challenges can all contribute to that overwhelming feeling. And add the holiday season, which is in full swing.

Can you relate?

Stress will always be a part of our lives, no way to get around that. How can you better manage stress?

There are different ways and approaches, many that I have covered over our time together. And here I want to spotlight one that I have spoken about before — and now is a great time to share about it again.

We can’t control the external stressors in our lives — what we can control is ourselves and how we handle it.

Let’s take a look at changing your internal perceptions to bring in better stress management. It’s not about the traffic jams, demanding boss, aggravating family member(s), the bustle of the holiday season, or the fact that we are at the end of yet another year.

I know it feels like all these are the issue, but on this journey of self-awareness there is an understanding that the stress experienced actually comes from your beliefs and the thoughts you attach to the situations.

Yes, it’s the meaning we give to what is happening that causes our stress — and even suffering. AND the thoughts that what is happening should not be — like we have a say over any of it.

When something stressful comes your way — do you react in the same old way or do you act in a NEW way? You get to choose. You have control.

I was listening to an interesting podcast where the host shared that no matter what is happening in your life, there are others who wish they had your life. Even someone who has cancer and is getting treatment, there is someone out there who also has cancer and does not have medical insurance or access to the best doctors.

What a shift in perspective, isn’t it?

It really gave me some food for thought and reminded me of my favorite Wayne Dyer quote: Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.

How do you change your view?

Here’s 3 ways to help you shift your perspective:

Tap into self-awareness — It starts with becoming mindful of your thoughts. What are the stories you tell yourself and others when something happens? Are you catastrophizing or assuming the worse will happen? When you become aware, you can shift your thoughts and reduce your stress.

Challenge negative thoughts — Spend time challenging the accuracy of your thoughts. Is there a more positive interpretation you can adopt? We tend to have a negativity bias and we tend to come from a fixed mindset. When you become aware, you can shift your thoughts and reduce your stress.

Focus on what you are able to control — Again, you can only control yourself, so put your attention and focus on that. We tend to focus on what we can’t control — and how does that help us — or the situation? It just causes more grief and drama. When you become aware, you can shift your thoughts and reduce your stress.

Through the demands of our daily lives along with the busyness of this holiday season, tap into your inner power to help you manage your stress levels. When you become more proactive by shifting your perceptions, you can take an overwhelming situation and make it more manageable.

Remember, you have more control than you think.
