3 Tips to Help Improve Your Writing!
They’re quick and easy and if you incorporate these 3 tips in your writings you will get a much better response from readers!
Whether it’s an article for your personal site or an article you are submitting to a publication in hopes of it getting printed, nobody starts out writing a piece with hopes of it not doing well or gaining any traction with readers. Most people who put out written work want their story to be viewed by as many people as possible and have as many interactions as possible(comments, likes, shares, etc.). But what is the secret to writing something that not only gets a bunch of interactions from readers, but also has readers actually reading the entire piece completely? Below are three tips I’ve learned that will not only help you get as many readers as possible, but will also will help you get more interactions on each piece you write.
Have A Catchy Title/Intro
This is one that is kind of assumed and we all know to some degree, but it can’t be stressed enough. People are not going to click on your article if it does not have a title that catches their attention. Try using words that grasp at the emotions. Make titles personal to the reader i.e. “Why Your Habit is Actually Destroying Your Health!”. Readers are more inclined to click a link if they feel like it is personally written to them. Along with a great title, your introduction paragraph has to be just as gripping. Everyone who clicks a link to read an article will at least typically read the first three to four sentences. The numbers go drastically down past those first few sentences if there is not something in there that captivates the reader. One of the most sought after speakers of the past few years has been Judah Smith. Something that he does, which I’ve incorporated into my writing, is he always begins with some type of story that pertains to the subject. It can be funny or serious or informative, but it has to grab the emotions of the listener early on so that they are on the hook for the rest of what you want to say. Try to think of some type of story that supports the main point of your article and lead with that to hook the reader!
Use Different Sized Fonts and Embolden Words
It almost feels kind of like cheating, but knowing how human brains operate and using that to your advantage can be the difference between your story getting read by a little or a lot of people. Our eyes are naturally drawn to large changes in font size as well as words that are emboldened. Use this to your advantage! Whenever there is a shift in thought, use a bigger font to signify that you are going in a different direction. This not only will grab the reader’s attention, it will also clearly let them know that you are making a different point. Don’t be afraid to also use that bold key on strong sentences or phrases. If there is a strong one-liner I want the reader to remember I will often embolden the entire thing so that it helps stick in their memory.
Bonus: Italicizing quotes is another tip that will grab readers’ attention. I will often pair this with changing the font size so the quote stands out on it’s own and will grab the readers’ eye.
Be Passionate About What You’re Writing
Now this is sometimes easier said than done. I understand that there will be times where you are required to write something that may not necessarily fall under what you are passionate about, but the more you are able to write passionate pieces the better. People can tell when someone creates out of passion versus creating out of obligation. The words seem to flow together much easier when writing with passion. For the pieces that you may not be as passionate about, at the very least be knowledgeable. There is nothing worse than reading an article where there are clear contradictions and information that is presented as fact but is incorrect. This is a quick way to lose the trust of your reader and in turn lose your reader. Put in the time to do your research first about your subject that way the knowledge seeps through as you are writing.
There are a bunch of other tips out there that can help your writing and this would be a lot longer of a piece if we tried to tackle them all. I believe these three things are a great starting point to help you go from a good writer to a great writer. As you begin to incorporate these tips in your writing, you’ll see the interactions with your writings begin to go up! Let me know what are some tips you’ve learned that have helped you in your writing journey.
