3 Tips to Help Guys Get Over a Breakup
Because breakups can be just as hard on us as well.
Hurtling through an intergalactic abyss, surroundings fading to a blur as his mind vacates his body and travels to another dimension.
This is what it felt like for Liam as he sat on the end of the bed in his bedroom, frozen in a trance, staring at the screen of his phone, reading and re-reading those two gut-wrenching words.
“It’s over.”
His world had come crashing down around him and he had no idea what he was going to do next.
Mental Chaos in All Its Glory
Breakups can be a living nightmare. Especially if you don’t see them coming.
One day you’re riding high, feeling like a boss. Strutting your stuff, you’ve got that swagger, a winner’s mentality, life is amazing. You’re killing it and the best part of it all, you’ve got the girl of your dreams by your side, she’s got your back and is cheering you on. A modern-day Bonnie and Clyde.
Then, without warning, the ride of a lifetime comes to an abrupt halt, flinging you headfirst into the deepest darkest pits of hell. Alone, with no one to turn to, no one to save you, depression sets in and you’ve no frickin' idea how you’re going to recover.
Devastation and mental chaos in all its glory.
But even when it feels like your world has crumbled into a destructive mess, your entire being is pointless and any sign of happiness or well-being has been ripped from your soul through a gaping hole in your chest, there are ways to overcome these feelings of despair and get yourself back to feeling like a winner again. Swagger ‘n' all.
Avoid Self-destruction
Dealing with situations such as a breakup has a tendency to drive guys down the route of self-destruction.
They turn to drinking and drug taking to numb the pain. Just looking for a few hours of relief from the torturous thoughts and feelings plaguing them daily.
But, as I’m sure you’re not surprised, this rarely works. All it does is postpone the suffering and leave you with a nasty hangover to deal with.
What you need to do is take control of the situation and here are a few tips to help you do so.
1. Self Grooming
Ok, so the last few days/weeks have not been pretty. Perhaps you haven’t been that focused on yourself so much and maybe you’ve let yourself go a little. Overgrown hair, scruffy beard, lazing around in track pants and an old worn-out t-shirt let’s say. Well, now it’s time to sort it out.
There’s nothing quite like a fresh haircut and a professional shave/beard trim to boost your mood and have you feeling like a million bucks again. How many times have you walked out of the barber’s feeling, meh? Not often. So getting yourself booked in for a service is the first step of your rejuvenation.
Then, once you’ve got that sorted, it’s time to spruce up your wardrobe. A few new threads to match your slick new trim can never be a bad thing. Retail therapy ain’t just for the ladies ya know.
Pamper yourself, in a manly way, because when you look good you feel good. That’s a fact!
2. Get Outside, Embrace Nature and Enjoy Some Music (but none of that soppy shit)
There’s a lot to be said for the great outdoors. Not only is a lung full of fresh air and some high-quality vitamin D great for your physical health, but it also does wonders for your mental health forbye.
A nice morning stroll around your local park or a weekend hike exploring the nature trails will have you feeling relaxed, calm and happy within yourself.
You can even fire up your Spotify and listen to some of your favourite tunes along the way. But make it something upbeat and fast-paced that puts you in a positive mood.
None of that self-pitying soppy shit. Now is not the time.
3. Exercise
You’ve likely already heard that exercise releases endorphins and boosts your overall health and sense of well-being, so, don’t neglect it. We’re trying to boost your mood here, remember?
For most people, the gym is their go-to place when it comes to getting their fitness fix. But, if like me, you get bored of the gym pretty quickly, then why not try something different to get that hit?
Maybe try a team sport or something more physical? A personal favourite of mine is Muay Thai and boxing. There’s nothing quite like smashing the bag or doing a heap of rounds on the pads to unwind and get rid of all that unwanted negative energy and frustration.
Just remember to protect yourself at all times. Pow 🥊💥.
Bonus Tip: Avoid Contact
Now, while all of the above suggestions are great for filling your days and keeping your mind occupied as you overcome your anguish. It’s at night when your mind can lead you astray. Which is why the best thing to do is avoid any contact with your ex.
Delete their phone number, unfriend them on socials and do whatever it takes to keep them out of your thoughts — easier said than done, I know. But you can do it, I believe in you.
Sure, during the first few days/weeks, this will be a challenge and you may slip up, but don’t be so tough on yourself.
Because the harder you try to resist and avoid contact with your ex-partner the easier it gets and before long you’ll be taking major steps at moving on and returning to that awesome figure of a man you were before. Legend!
To Sum It Up
So, there you have it. Of course, breakups are hard, no matter what side of the fence you may fall upon, and yes at times it can feel like your entire world has come crashing down around you, but as bad as it may seem in the moment, there are always ways to overcome the heartache.
Self-grooming, the great outdoors and exercise may not soothe your distress overnight, but they will help. Then, with time you’ll figure out other ways that work best in helping you return to your legendary self.
