3 tips to get out of the “struggling artist” trap
If you’re a Content Creator, chances are that you can relate to the following:
You are a “hobby creator” or you are living month to month, always chasing the next paycheck. You are very creative and work very hard but your bank account doesn’t reflect that.
Trust me, I’ve been there. I know exactly how you feel.

When I was 18 years old, I just wanted a job. Any job. So I started selling vacuum cleaners.
When I was 22, I was lucky to get a better-paying job. It was still boring, but at least I had more money now.
When I was 28, I finally got a job that was both paying well and was fun; I got hired as a Video Editor at a web agency.
When I was 30, I started freelancing as a “Content Creator”. Now, I was earning well, had a fun job AND I could work less than 40 hours per week.
Now, when I’m 33, I’m a part-time freelancer and a part-time YouTuber. I love my job, I earn enough and I can spend a lot of time on my YouTube channel while having multiple growing passive income streams, coming in each month.
I’m telling you this because I want to share what I’ve learned along the way. I want to help you move forward faster than I did and start making passive income earlier so that you can free up time for yourself and take control of your calendar.
So where should you start?
First of all, to build a business that you can scale up as a solopreneur, you need to stop trading time for money. (Or at least not primarily rely on that income method.)
This means that you want to find ways to make money while you’re not actively working. There are multiple ways of doing this.
You can create digital products, you can create courses, you can sign up for affiliate programs, you can build a YouTube channel, or start writing on Medium. You could also upload “members only” content to platforms such as “Uscreen”.
I’m not gonna tell you what path to take or what to start with but I want to share some advice while you consider your options:
1️⃣ Define your niche first. How are you branding yourself? 500 superfans are always better than 5000 random contacts, so be super specific about your niche and create content around that! Don’t just build a big audience because it “looks good”. (The actual conversion will be way better every time you try to promote something to your audience.)
2️⃣ Share relevant content/tips/products. This might sound obvious, but simply signing up for an affiliate program without linking to products that are relevant to your audience is just a waste of time. Get to know your audience, find out what they want and need and create products/courses or sign up for affiliate programs that are relevant to them. Focus on solving their problems!
3️⃣ Create recurring income. Affiliate programs can be great for “one-off” sales but what’s even better than selling single products is to refer your audience to membership sites. What products or software can you make a monthly commission from by sending people over to that site to sign up? (Still, be genuine and honest. Don’t recommend things you haven’t tried yourself.)
As a bonus tip, I would highly suggest setting a financial goal. How much would you like to earn per month? Make it specific and count backward to figure out how many products you need to sell each month or how many clients you need to have per month. Then plan your year in a way that will make it possible to achieve this in a realistic timeframe.
And remember that setting a high financial goal isn’t “being greedy”. Money has no emotion connected to it. Money is just a tool to get what you want, the same way an axe is a tool that you can use for good or bad things. Be intentional. What you do with that tool is up to you.
I encourage you to think bigger and start taking steps towards your financial goal today! The earlier you start, the quicker you can get there!
