3 Tips I Learned From Failing Flight Attendant Training 3 Times!

Last month I was dismissed from flight Attendant training for the third time now I’m sharing wisdom so you can pass the first time!

Only about 60 percent of students pass flight attendant training on the first try. However, only some will talk about the times they failed.

…and almost no one will admit they didn’t graduate 3 times!

To be 100 percent real I was bullied all three times in flight attendant training.

The last time in training I passed all my tests, and drills with over 90 percent to 98 percent accuracy, however, the last week before graduation (each time) I was dismissed for one reason or another.

I didn’t pass the test the first time with a 90 percent on my retake. The second time I messed up on an evacuation drill. ..

But the last time was because I stood up for myself, using a few choice words against everyone in the class that bullied me constantly and it got me dismissed without even hearing my side and little time to explain my experience.

But here I am…

I am here to share the times I failed. To discuss what I learned to help you pass the first time, so you don’t have to live in your BMW like I did. Yes, I became technically homeless after not graduating from flight attendant training. Flight attendant training pay does not cover a 1 bedroom apartment in Midtown Atlanta. Not typical, but for some airlines you receive a weekly or biweekly pay which may be around $140 a week with a $1000 stiffen after graduation. But some airlines do not pay anything for training. At the most, they may provide you with meals on days you go to training. Other airlines may pay you $48 a day plus a 24-hour $2 per diem. But there is no set standard of training pay from airline to airline.

This article is going to be short but powerful, not because I don’t have a lot to share but because when I didn’t make it through training this last time, I had nowhere to go back to, to call home, and my computer battery was running out from writing in my car, where sometimes I had to sleep at night. This road is not always easy.

I have no shame at this point so dropping my cash app here to buy me a coffee, lunch, or donate for my 4th training coming up (continue to read to find out more): Cash App: $realtalktina

The first truth of flight attendant training is when you don’t graduate you do not have a job. That was it for me.

Here are my top tips so you do not have to live in your car not even for a day:

Lesson #1 know your personality type

The third time in training I aced all my tests.

It wasn’t easy but it was easier than the first, or second time in training. I’ll say that.

What got dismissed a week before graduation in training like I did at each of the other times, was not speaking up early enough when I was being bullied.

The first few times I was bullied but I didn’t speak up about it each time. I was still taken to HR by the bully. The last time in training I just tried to ignore all of it and avoid getting pulled in HR.

My focus was to keep my head to the books. Each time I tried to sidestep ignore and avoid meetings with HR and disagreements with my fellow trainees they tried to corner me and get me to argue with them before tests and exams. As An INFJ personality, we are often in the mix of difficult situations as children and adults where we are there to heal and change the situation and show the way. INFJ personality type is the rarest personality type according to Myers Briggs personality type to learn your personality type check out a free resource here

knowing your personality type will help you know if this job is for you or not.

It’s up to an INFJ to take the higher ground despite the emotional turmoil from others that we receive.

We have to rise above all of the projected insecurity of others around us. Others seem to take things out on us. So the lesson is to rise above the attacks it is easier said than done!

In flight attendant school I noticed there were a lot of bullies who were competitive for all the wrong reasons as if they were fighting against me for the job but in reality, all we had to do was help everyone in the group to pass not compete.

Lesson #2 Don’t overshare (These people are not your friends)

It’s important to maintain professional boundaries.

Remember, that your fellow trainees and instructors are your colleagues, not your confidants or friends. While camaraderie is important its essential to maintain a level of professionalism at all times.

Focus on building respectful relationships that will serve you during your training and throughout your career as a flight attendant but not on being well-liked or popular.

Lesson # 3 Adaptability is key

Once you start the journey of becoming a flight attendant, you will be moving to a new base, most likely.

Your life will change completely.

You will meet new people.

Your schedule will change completely.

You will need to adapt swiftly to new situations in flight and even on the ground in the airport. There are a lot of things that a person who is considering being a flight attendant will need to be flexible about, starting from the first day of training to when you are officially on the line after you receive your wings. Be adaptable in all situations including roommate situations and start from the beginning this is key to success!
