3 Tips for Christian Writers on Medium
What I’ve learned after writing on Medium for one year.
Don’t start a Medium blog to make money.
While it’s nice if you are able to join the Medium Partner Program and have the potential to earn money, it shouldn’t be your motivation for starting a Medium blog. If it is, you will burn out very quickly. I set up my Medium blog because I felt God nudging me to start posting my writing publicly, and Medium makes it very easy to do so.
Unfortunately, I also focused a lot of my time and energy on trying to make more money on the platform, and it did not go well. Now, I like to remind myself to view Medium as a ministry, and if I make a little money from it, great, but that is not the goal. My goal is to write what God places on my heart and trust that He will place my posts in front of those who need to read them.
Allow the Holy Spirit to inspire and lead your writing.
Try not to push yourself too hard to keep up with the standards of the blogging world. Every blog you will read about how to succeed on Medium is going to tell you to post a minimum of 3–5 times a week, if not more. Unless it is sustainable for you and your lifestyle to post that frequently, don’t submit to the pressure. I did, and I became exhausted trying to write from an empty cup.
Prioritize your relationship with God and surrender your writing to Him. I have found this to be the only sustainable way to write because it will always flow naturally in God’s perfect timing. Some weeks I post often, and some weeks I don’t post at all. And my most enjoyable writing experiences are when the Holy Spirit places a topic on my heart that won’t go away until I sit down and write.

Have fun and write how you want to write.
Don’t worry about following a traditional blog structure or incorporating enough keywords for search engine optimization (SEO) throughout each post. Have fun and experiment with different structures and styles. I have written a mix of structured posts, stream-of-consciousness posts, devotionals, and prayers or love notes to God. The options are endless!
If I always tried to follow a traditional blog structure, use enough keywords for SEO, and post at the recommended times, my writing would become dry and uninspired, and I would begin to despise it. So, instead of pressuring myself to be super structured in my writing process, I like to keep a notebook with me at all times so that I can write whenever–and however–inspiration hits.
Conclusion
If God has placed the desire to write on your heart, then pursue it! Medium is an excellent platform to start. I hope my tips have both inspired you and will help you avoid the mistakes I made in my first year writing on Medium.
