3 Times My Heart Exploded as a Father

My Daughter was born 3 1/2 months ago. It was the greatest day of my life, thus far. People tell you how you’re going to feel when you have a child but there’s nothing like experiencing it for yourself. Many people use the expression, “your heart feels like it’s going to explode when you first hold her.” I now understand what they meant.

Here are 3 times I felt like my heart was going to explode as a father:

#1 Dropping Her Off at Daycare for the 1st Time

We’ll start with a sad one. Putting your child in the hands of a total stranger (for the first time ever) is very difficult. We handed her off and she looked back at us with a “what is going on?” face. It’s that look you make when you’re pretending to smile but you are worried.

You’re coming with me, right?

That’s what she’d say if she could talk. My heart broke (more than exploded) in this instance. Weeks later, I still remember her face as they carried her away. My wife immediately started sobbing…I wanted to. This reaction may seem dramatic, and I understand, but we were both with her every day for the first 12 weeks of her life. She knew nothing else. Sending a child off to daycare for the first time is a rite of passage, but damn, it’s a tough one.

#2 “Daddy’s Home!” (From Work)

While dropping her off at daycare may be a heartbreaker, coming home from a long day of work is now the best. I genuinely miss her while I’m at work. Infants grow so quickly and sometimes you feel like you’re missing out while on the grind. Walking through the door in the evening and seeing her look back at the door, and finally locking eyes. That’s the best part of my day.

#3 The Moment She was Born

Obviously can’t forget this one. Nothing is bigger. Nothing changes your life and flips it upside down quite like this. What an out-of-body experience (especially for my wife.) There is such a mixture of anxiety and joy in the delivery room. You want her to be healthy and at the same time wonder what she’ll look like, how big she’ll be, and which parent she’ll look like.

The moment left me emotional and speechless. There is no life experience that compares to seeing your daughter for the first time. A completely helpless bundle of joy. Your attitude as a father immediately changes. Your responsibilities as a man quadruple. You want to do anything and everything for her.
