3 Things to Do When You Don’t Feel Inspired to Write

#3 Eat one piece of dark chocolate

There are times, like today, where I don’t feel like writing. The demon of creativity comes in and tells me that I have nothing worthy to say, and nobody cares what I have to say (if I did have anything to say, haha). But today, I am not going to give up, instead I’ll get through.

These are the things to do when you don’t feel inspired to write because:

“Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.” — Mary Lou Cook

Go on a short walk in nature

I’ve said this before many times in my writing — nature not only heals, but it brings you creativity. There may be times when I go on a short walk feeling down to be lifted by the birds tweeting, the trees nestling in the breeze, and me finally feeling at ease. When I don’t feel like writing, purely a ten-minute walk outside in nature can bring me so much happiness and hope that I come back feeling refreshed and ready again to take on writing (as I am doing now!).

Research shows nature curates a creativity boost. While we opt to stay inside instead of going outside in the fresh air, a study back in 2012 showed that:

“Four days of immersion in nature — and the corresponding disconnection from multimedia and technology — increases performance on problem-solving tasks.”

Ok, so you’re not going to take four days outside, but even just four minutes or up to twenty minutes will boost your creativity, productivity, and even well-being. You may want to go out on a walk to soothe your cold even:

Or you may be feeling lonely, and nature can bring some feeling of warmth and connection:

Lastly, you may be stuck inside due to lockdown. Take a few minutes outside:

When you’ve taken a walk, you may want to continue on your path of well-being and:

Make a cup of coffee (the ritual and all)

So my dad has this ritual whenever he comes home from work to make some coffee. But it’s not just any coffee; it is his filter coffee the old school way. He takes his time in the kitchen to prepare it and then brew it. It takes him probably 15 to 20 minutes to prepare, but the smell and ritual are so rewarding, to say the least.

I, on the other hand, have a similar routine when it comes to tea. Being in a mental clinic has made me miss my morning rituals, such as making a pot of tea where I would put the loose leaves in the pot and then wait for it to brew and smell lush. I would do this mostly with green tea, and it made me feel happy.

Do you have a tea or coffee making ritual? It may bring you some creative flow. Last but not least, my favourite trick to do when you’re not feeling inspired to write is to:

Eat one piece of dark chocolate (preferably more than 70%)

Dark chocolate is my go to. Being in a mental clinic, the food isn’t the best (I guess just like hospital food), so my dad tends to bring me 70% chocolate every week to keep me going. Not only is it full of antioxidants and has less sugar than milk chocolate, but it contains minerals and a high level of cocoa which is good for the heart.

I say only to eat one piece, because it is so rich and can be dense in calories. I also say to only eat on piece because you can then savour the flavour and light up your inspiration. Research shows:

“If you need a creativity boost, just eat one of those bulbs, and ‘they will light up your ideas’”

So what are you waiting for?!

In conclusion

Remember, even in the days when you don’t feel like writing may actually be the days when you need to write and have something to say that you didn't realise. I’ve written about this before:

So eat that one piece of chocolate, savour the coffee ritual, and go for a walk because:

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” Maya Angelou
