3 Things Rich People Do To Stay Rich

Becoming rich is not rocket science

Have you ever dreamed of becoming rich? I’m not just talking 6 figures. I’m talking millionaire, multimillionaire, or even a billionaire.

I’m sure most of us have. But did you know that there are a lot of financial mistakes and habits that keep you poor?

Here are the top ten things that rich people do to get and stay rich:

3. Investing

Investing is growing in popularity more and more — especially amongst Gen Z and Millenials. Investing in stocks, shares, bonds and cryptocurrency are the most popular ways of investing.

Instead of keeping your money in a bank earning pennies per month in interest, you could put your money into stocks.

Not only would you own a part of that company, your money will most likely grow over time.

Investing in dividend stocks may be a good place to start. This essentially means the company will pay you purely for owning a share in their stock.

For example, instead of buying the new iPhone this year, you could probably buy 7 Apple shares for $165 per share totalling around $1157 (as of April 2022) and Apple would pay you $1.54 per quarter.

I know this seems like next to nothing, but you could definitely buy a couple Starbucks drinks with that :)

Plus, there are plenty of other stocks that have higher dividend yields and lower share prices. Do your research. Remember that you’d be getting $6 per year just to hold the stock — the bank definitely doesn’t do that!

Top Tip: Investing is like shopping. You’re always looking for a bargain — you need to buy low and sell high. Never panic sell. And if you’re a beginner, keep leverage low and do not put on a stop loss. You only lose money when you sell.

2. Reading

In the new era of Netflix, binge-watching TV, partying, and gaming has become what’s cool. But what sets rich people apart from everyone else is their daily habits.

I’m sure Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk must sit down and binge Netflix once in a while (right?) but they definitely read for enjoyment and education.

However, you can’t just read any old book. I mean, I love fiction — plopping down onto the couch and immersing myself into a fun YA novel is one of my favourite things to do. But when it comes to making money, education is key.

In fact, 85% of rich people read two or more education, career-related or personal development books per month. That’s compared to only 15% of poor people.

Rich people are always learning. So if you want to be rich, it’s important to learn from them.

Some of my favourite common finance and personal development books to read are:

  • The Intelligent Investor
  • Think and Grow Rich
  • The 4-Hour Work Week
  • Rich Dad, Poor Dad
  • One Up On Wall Street
  • Atomic Habits
  • Awaken The Giant Within

…and many more.

A lot of rich people actually don’t read finance books. There is a huge emphasis on personal development — becoming a better you and knowing yourself is the way to success. Reading exercises the brain, improves concentration, literacy, and sleep.

You’d think a lot of Medium writers read as much as they write, but strangely, I don’t think so.

If you have any suggestions on books to read, comment some below.

1. Waking Up Early

No lie-ins.

Sound awful, right? But this is the number one thing billionaires have in common. I’m suddenly starting to think I don’t want to be rich…

Waking up early is the key to productivity. Entrepreneurs claim that waking up before 6am is beneficial to them. It allows them to get up before everyone else, reflect on the day ahead and meditate, exercise, enjoy a nice breakfast, and still have enough time to do everything else in their day.

Obviously this takes a lot of dedication and everybody has different situations and circumstances. But talking from experience, I 100% believe I’m better off whenever I wake up early. There’s so much more time in the day and you feel more motivated than ever.
