3 Things I Am Grateful For In My Life
In Response to Dancing Elephants Prompt 8 of 52
I have meant to participate more in the Dancing Elephants prompts, but life keeps getting in the way. This is a good one for getting started as I try to remember to take the time to look for the good each week. Here are the three things I am grateful for in my life.
My Family

I don’t have friends. At least not friends who I see in real life. Or friends who text or call me. If not for my wife, kids, and my siblings, I would rarely talk to another human. My wife has stuck with me even when I am difficult to live with. She stuck with me when I left my job mid-pandemic for mental health reasons and she has been there for my search for what’s next. My kids have also been there and have supported me through it all. My siblings text me at least once a day. I don’t think I would have survived the past couple of years without family and I am grateful they have been with me through the tough times.
Television
This might seem like an odd thing to be grateful for, but I have always been a bit of a TV addict. I even turned the TV schedule into a poem for an assignment in English class when I was in high school. It’s been a lifelong love. I have not been reading as much as I did before my mental health issues and TV has been what I’ve turned to for distraction. I also write a daily “What’s on TV Tonight” post on my blog. Sometimes it is all I have time or energy for, so TV keeps me writing something each day. It is also an interest I can share with my family. A lot of our family time is watching TV shows we all love.
Volunteering
For the first year of my post-job life, I didn’t leave the house much. I walked the dog. I visited family when possible. That was about it. Part of that was due to the pandemic. Most of it was that I has nowhere to go. That changed in November of 2021 when I joined a program where you could volunteer at various locations for the month. One of those places was Maryland Therapeutic Riding. While I was there, I asked about volunteering regularly. They gave me the details and in January 2022 I went to orientation and started volunteering there weekly. I just finished another November in the same program where I did various other volunteer shifts.
I served food at a dance party at GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center.
I worked at a drive up food pantry.
I worked the Toys for Tots Truck.
I was out of the house and doing things that helped other people. Helping others is good for my mental health and I’m glad I had the opportunity to do so. I might look into doing more work with GiGi’s Playhouse.
None of this pays the bills, but it makes life better.
What are you grateful for in your life?
