3 Things CS Students Can Do This Summer

It’s summer, now what? I know it’s tempting to just take the whole summer break, sit down on the beach and do nothing. However, I have a few suggestions for all Computer Science students out there to make their summer more productive and advance their professional careers. I have done these things myself, and I don’t regret them at all. By doing these things during your summer break, you are setting up yourself to land a job after graduation. Not only will you acquire knowledge but you can add these things to your resume and wow your potential employers. So, let’s get started.

Go on a summer internship

Internships are great when you are an undergraduate student. These opportunities serve as a great complement to a students professional development. These summer experiences bring an excellent opportunity to apply the skills you have learned in the classroom. I had the superb opportunity to participate in a summer research program, and I don’t regret it at all. I learned new things such as smartphones sensors and how to implement them into native Android applications. Also, I had the chance to apply my knowledge of the Java programming language into a practical application that positively impacted society. On top of that, I had the chance to travel and discover new places. So, I totally recommend it.

Take a summer course

A lot of Computer Science programs out there offer summer courses. These courses are an excellent opportunity to get your GPA (repeating Calculus, anyone?) up or even get ahead of your coursework and graduate earlier than expected. However, my advice is not limited courses inside your campus but outside as well. There a lot of online platforms out there where you can learn new skills in the area of web, mobile, and desktop development. Or even other topics such as Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

Learn new technologies

This one relates to the previous tip. Summer is an excellent opportunity to learn new technologies. Such as picking up a new programming language. Or even you had an idea that you always wanted to turn into an app? Well, now is the time. On top of that, you can add these new skills to your resume.

So, what are you waiting for? Don’t be lazy and get to coding!
