3 slang words that changed meaning over the years.
Disclaimer to any of these words that may be too harsh, as I’m only using these words to describe them in an educational way.
- “Fag”.
Ok that’s a pretty harsh one. I grew up with fag meaning, a homosexual person, whereas, in the 90s, it meant to stop acting like a punk, but the real meaning is a cigarette. Yes, all a fag is, is a cigar. The British still use it in that sense, and maybe it only changed in America. Now this does not mean its ok to say this word to just anyone, anywhere and even though you mean cigar, unless you are around people who know what you are talking about, you might not get the best reaction, as it is still used as a derogatory phrase, but more on that later.
2. “Thot”
I don't know if people still say this, but if you are a Y2K/2010s baby, you know this phrase. For anyone who does not know, a “thot” was/is slang for a hoe. Very weird, mostly because its origin, is actually a person. Thot was someone we almost all heard of, but he had a different name. That name was Anubis. Anubis’s real name, before it was changed over time was thot. Exactly how its spelled and sounds. It sounds like I'm lying but I'm not. I was shocked myself when I found out. Especially because this historic entity’s name was changed for a harsh word to a person, who probably just likes to show alittle skin. (BTW, absolutely nothing wrong with that.)
3. “Queer”
Again, another homosexual phrase, which is not. A lot of people are aware of this, but queer just simply means strange. A prime example in how its supposed to be used is, there is a scene from Nightmare before Christmas, during the song “What's This”, he says “ They got alittle tree, how queer”, as in simply, how strange or how unusual from what your used to. That word is alittle more appropriate to say at times, because a lot of people know that's what it means, but again, context.
Like I was saying earlier, its great to know the meanings of these words, so you know how to say them and so you will just know the meanings. But because these meanings have changed overtime and are only relevant to current generations, who’s to say when it will change back to its original origin? Only time will tell……
