3 Simple Steps for a Happier and More Fulfilled Morning
Your morning doesn’t need a lot to be happy
Waking up to the sun streaming through my window helps when being in a mental clinic. Yet some days I don’t feel like getting up at all — the effort is strenuous. However, I have realised that there are small steps to take for a better morning. It’s not meditation or yoga (although I am a yoga teacher and breathe the benefits!), but they are much more simple things.
So here are three simple steps for a happier and more fulfilled morning.
“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive — to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.”— Marcus Aurelius
Stop looking at your phone
Firstly, what do you do when you wake up? Look at your phone? Ok, let’s stop that. I am also a culprit of this, and ever since stopping it, I feel much brighter and alive.
Research shows more people think about their phones first thing in the morning than coffee; a staggering 35% of people think about their phones when they first wake up. Are you one of these people? Me too to be honest — don’t beat yourself up about it.
Currently, in a mental clinic due to mental health issues, I find it harder to spring out of bed without checking my phone for the time. However, the nurses come into our rooms to wake us up at 7, so I have no excuse to look at my phone early on in the morning anymore. It taints my view and brings me fear sometimes of what I will do.
The next step for a happier and more fulfilled morning is to:
Start looking out the window.
Every day, make an effort to look out of the window when opening your curtains. Breathe deeply and notice your presence as well as nature healing you. Remember that today is not just any day but the first day of your life. This way, you can start to achieve the things you want to by believing that someday is right now if you choose it.
“Someday is not a day of the week.” — Denise Brennan-Nelson
Looking out the window will get you in the state of flow and allow you to be more grateful for what is around you and within you. Here’s how to go with the flow and refuel yourself for a good morning:
Last but not least, when looking out your window, take the time to then:
Go on a walk
There is a myriad of magical wonders a morning walk can do for both mind and body. According to IRT, there are nine health benefits of taking morning walks:
- A natural boost of energy
- Improved mental health
- Deeper sleep
- Boosts your brain health
- Improves your heart health
- Stay connected
- Reduces risk of diabetes
- Improves your balance
- Reduces muscle and joint pain
Before you go for a walk in the morning, take a moment or two to stretch and wake up the body. When you go on your walk, make sure not to take your phone or put it off data! That’s what I’ve been doing now, and it’s working wonders. I have to take my phone at times to take photos of nature (I’m a sucker for nature shots!), but I know that it is also better to be without your phone when wanting to feel the walk's benefits.
So there you have it — three simple steps for a happier and more fulfilled morning. Make sure not to look at your phone straight away, then look out the window, and enjoy a fresh morning walk!
