A recipe for lifelong serenity

Life is not easy, yet most of us know people that seem to never fail to enjoy life. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they have it easy, but it’s more about the way they perceive life.

In good times, their energy brings joy into every moment you spent with them and even the daily chores that would otherwise feel dull feels enjoyable. In bad times, they make you feel like you’d not want to be with anyone else going through that though experience. They make you feel as if their energy heals you through the support they offer you.

In my life, I’ve always admired the people who can maintain this kind of way of living and wanted to become more like them. That’s why I wanted to observe them and by doing so, I’ve realized that there were 3 habits that these people had in common. These habits are:

1-They have a growth mindset

2-They let go of control

3-They practice mindfulness

1-They have a growth mindset

Our risk calculation ability is essential for our survival, yet we sometimes mistake it with our comfort zone. This way the fear of making a mistake or failing can prevent us from trying things or not enjoying them as we feel anxious not to make a mistake.

That’s why it is important to adopt a growth mindset and allow yourself to learn from your experiences. This way you won’t label anything that goes wrong as a mistake, and you’ll use it as a resource to grow and improve.

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” -Robert Kennedy

2-They let go of control

Most of us have heard the phrase that “control is an illusion”, but accepting and letting it become your way of life is another challenge. Although it takes effort, to achieve letting go of control, it is important not to justify your urge to control everything and accept that we are only humans.

This way we can avoid stealing joy from the moment, and live a bit calmer due to the decrement in our worries.

“Peace requires us to surrender our illusions of control.”

— Jack Kornfield

3-They practice mindfulness

When you google it, “mindfulness” is described as “A mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.”.

This is important because being in the moment prevents us from overthinking and worries. The people who never fail to enjoy life are in the moment, and that’s how they protect their energy from getting distributed by the past or future.

To apply mindfulness to your life, I recommend using the senses method. This method advises focusing on your senses to get back into the moment. It can involve what you hear, what you smell etc. This way you can get out of your head, and become aware of the present moment.

“With mindfulness, you can establish yourself in the present in order to touch the wonders of life that are available in that moment.” — Thich Nhat Hanh
